Cambridge to continue as host of the NIHR BioResource

The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) has awarded £49.2 million to Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to continue hosting the NIHR BioResource for four years from 1 April 2025.

Since 2012 the NIHR BioResource has collected and maintained a resource of data and samples donated by 290,000 individuals from the general population and patients with rare and common diseases, who wish to participate in medical research. These volunteers can be selected and asked to take part in research studies investigating

Microbiology Society reveals Annual Conference ‘Hot Topic’

The Microbiology Society has announced that the ‘Hot Topic’ presentation at its Annual Conference 2025 will be ‘Soil Microbiomes and One Health’, given by Professor Marcel van der Heijden. The Society’s Annual Conference takes

place from 31 March – 3 April at the Arena and Convention Centre Liverpool. Professor van der Heijden’s presentation will take place on the event’s final day. Marcel van der Heijden is a

Professor of Agroecology and Plant-Microbiome Interactions at the University of Zurich and research institute Agroscope (Switzerland). Professor van der Heijden will discuss his cutting-edge research on

plant and soil microbiomes and the key role of soil microbes as drivers of soil health, ecosystem performance, and sustainable agriculture. On the opportunity to present the Hot

Topic Lecture at the Microbiology Society’s Annual Conference 2025, Professor van der Heijden said: “It is a big honour for me to present the Hot Topic at the Microbiology Society Annual Conference 2025 and explore the role of microbes in ecosystems and discuss the factors that regulate microbial communities.” Find out more and register at the website microbiologysociety.org.

the links between genes and disease. Through the collection of clinical data and samples, the NIHR BioResource supports industry and researchers undertaking studies which have the

potential to rapidly advance the understanding of disease mechanisms, identify potential drug targets and improve insight into emerging therapies. The NIHR BioResource national

coordinating centre is located in Cambridge and is hosted by Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in partnership with the University of Cambridge. Professor Marian Knight, Scientific

Director for NIHR Infrastructure, said: “Since 2012 the NIHR BioResource has been a key component of the UK’s genomic research infrastructure with its focus on consenting and recalling patients within specific disease cohorts and within the healthy general population. Our £49.2 million investment will help keep the UK at the forefront of genomic research; bringing investment into the UK’s life sciences sector and ultimately innovative treatments to patients.”
