EXTERNAL QUALITY ASSESSMENT

GENie: specialist Genomic Online Individual Education from GenQA

With genomics set to play an important role in future healthcare, ongoing EQA and training in the area will be vital for biomedical scientists. Introducing GENie, the specialist Genomic Online Individual Education platform launched by GenQA.

GenQA is a member of the UK NEQAS consortium and is the only External Quality Assessment (EQA)/Proficiency Testing provider offering assessments covering the end-to-end genomic pathway. In 2023, GenQA introduced the Genomics Individual Education Platform – known as GENie – which builds on GenQA’s extensive expertise in providing individual competency assessment

already used by 50,000 participants worldwide.

Individual competency support has

been offered by GenQA to laboratory professionals through targeted initiatives since 2016. In 2020, engagement increased markedly with the introduction of COVID-19-related modules, such as care-home swabbing. This success and increased demand underscored the

need for a standardised and expandable framework to deliver training and competency assessment ultimately leading to the creation of GENie. Since 2023, 8,734 participants have completed at least one module on GENie. In total, 9,317 participations have been recorded, as participants can retake some modules multiple times (Fig 1).

GENie Assessments GenQA supports the use of international standards for reporting genomic variants, as GENie includes modules for germline single nucleotide and copy number variants classification, BRCA1, BRCA2 and other homologous recombination repair (HRR) gene variant classification, Human Genome Variation Society (HGVS)1 nomenclature and International System for Human Cytogenomic Nomenclature (ISCN).2

assessment to the full workforce, a new series of nomenclature modules was released that targets all levels of knowledge
