of which is spent on the equipment alone. Hospital equipment is a variable that should be taken into account from the beginning and must be developed in conjunction with the design of the project. The following points should be taken


into consideration: l the chosen equipment has an impact on the general dimensions of the hospital, eg automated transport systems require greater breadth of movement, loading bay space and recharging zones


l the assembly and installation requirements of the equipment must be defined


l the structure has to be prepared for some features. For example, overloads of equipment of more than 1000 kg, ceiling fixings for heavy units such as surgical lamps


l there must be excellent co-ordination with the architectural project in order to understand the implications of changes in the location of equipment. For example, if proposing to swap the CT scanning room with MRI, the first room needs to be insulated with lead, the second with copper.


The following tools can be helpful during this stage:


Equipment plan An equipment plan (room by room or room data sheet) is a detailed list in which spaces, equipment and quantities are noted, identified and coded. The equipment plan for a hospital of about 25,000 m2


may include: 800 spaces to


be equipped; 1000 items of equipment distributed space by space (about 10,000 cables); 30,000 cables with technical specifications related to the equipment; blueprints, technical documents, pre- installation tables.


A plot plan A plot plan consists of a graphical representation of the equipment location in the form of blueprints, which are drawn to scale and identify the equipment using graphic icons and codes that match those in the equipment plan. The advantages are that it locates the equipment in the most efficient way possible, proposing an arrangement that improves routes and guarantees the safety of patients and staff. It also optimises the equipment project by adjusting it to the actual space available and allows for mistakes to be corrected during the planning stage and before purchase and/or implementation. Finally, it allows for more efficient supervision of supply, set up and future maintenance (logistics management). The following criteria should also be


taken into account: architectural and facility limitations and equipment operating requirements; safety

A plot plan can be made only for the


most complex spaces or for the entire hospital. The latter is the most effective way of managing the arrival of equipment during the later stages of the project.


Pre-installation table This is an essential tool for adjusting the design requirements to what is envisaged in the equipment plan and to be able to size and co-ordinate other specific projects (such as structural reinforcements and installations).


During the design phase and as long as


definitive information on the equipment that the proprietor plans to acquire is not available, the project team should compile, with specialist support, a pre-installation requirements table, which includes information on: type of equipment, code and full name, weights and measurements; electrical requirements, data, ventilation, air conditioning, medical gases (eg compressed air, medicinal, O2 vacuum, NO2

and hot water, drainage. These elements must be updated during all subsequent stages, so we must assume that changes will occur.
