TRANSPORT SOLUTIONS

Transport hubs are potentially well suited to a hospital environment due to the number of staff who commute and stay for long periods throughout the day

hours a car club membership is created. Enterprise also undertook driving licence checks for NHS trust compliance across the UK. Contactless membership cards are provided to every authorised driver with employee ID passes and an app that facilitate access to the vehicles. Vehicles are delivered to reserved parking bays giving employees a safe and secure handover location. Each vehicle is provided with a vehicle specific fuel card and users refuel prior to returning the vehicle. According to Brian Golding, director

of estates and facilities at York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, using the data the Enterprise team provides on business journeys has also facilitated the creation of a comprehensive travel policy that promotes car sharing and further reduces mileage by ensuring employees only take trips that are absolutely necessary.

Widening the benefit The use of a third party provider can bring investment through the introduction of a car fleet as seen in York, which may also enable trusts to make a step change in their use of carbon based fuels. Transport initiatives being looked at by freight hauliers servicing London include using depots on the outskirts of London to act as transfer stations from diesel powered vehicles to those with ultra-low emissions. This enables them to deliver goods in the proposed ultra-low emission zones, which come into effect from October 2020. Similar platforms are new transport hubs that are a part of a smart grid. Low carbon energy is generated onsite by the use of combined cooling, heat and power (CCHP) and this is supplemented by photovoltaic cells and battery storage, while all the energy and utilities are managed by smart systems and technologies. This means that low or zero

carbon energy is available to charge the electric vehicles and means they have time to charge, providing the dual benefit of improving air quality by reducing vehicle generated emissions and reducing carbon emissions by using sustainable techniques to power them. Transport hubs are potentially well

suited to a hospital environment due to the number of staff who commute and stay for long periods throughout the day. The vehicles can be charging in the transport hub while not in use. This is supported by using the large amount of energy generation that is required for an individual site. Introducing a car club can result in demonstrable cost savings, sustainability and health and safety benefits. Extending this to a transport policy that uses electric vehicles for work related travel and is supplied by a sustainable smart grid will enable a reduction in operational costs and a reduction in overall carbon emissions.
