PATIENT CARE

The six-storey building is home to the College of Medical and Dental Sciences’ School of Dentistry, and all public access dental services. The facility is equipped to treat over 120,000 patients a year in areas ranging from unscheduled emergency dental care, restorative dentistry, oral surgery, oral medicine through to orthodontics and paediatric dentistry. There is a total of 154 dentist chairs and over 1000 staff members, including undergraduate and postgraduate students and trainees.

The building was officially opened by Her Majesty The Queen, accompanied by His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, who met with clinicians, researchers and students during a guided tour of the ground-breaking facilities. Ralph added: “For more than 600 undergraduate and postgraduate students and trainees, the Birmingham Dental Hospital and School of Dentistry provides world-class research facilities and a modern learning environment. It has been built especially for students’ advancement, bringing dental teaching in the Midlands into the 21st century.” “Pebble Mill is just a mile from the

university’s central campus which allows dentistry students to move easily between clinics, lectures, social and fitness activities. The new building combines the latest thinking, optimum building design, and state-of-the-art facilities with flexibility.” Next to move into the site was Bupa, which has built a £12 million purpose-built care home. The 62-bed facility provides nursing, dementia and residential care and includes a multi-purpose activities room and beauty salon.

The home provides 24-hour support, accommodation and personal care, offering specialist residential, nursing, day care, convalescence and end of life care. It features a rooftop terrace looking out over neighbouring Edgbaston and a landscape garden complete with dining area and its own pizza oven. With 26 nursing rooms, 26 rooms for people living with dementia and ten residential rooms all with en-suite bathrooms, the three-storey building is at the cutting-edge of latest design but has been designed to ensure residents feel completely comfortable and relaxed. Speaking about the facility Karl Dawson, Bupa Care Homes’ regional director, said: “I’m delighted the home has officially opened to residents. Its modern and vibrant surroundings are ideal for providing expert care. Pebble Mill represents the future of care. We have a fantastic team in place at the home and, a wide range of facilities, ensuring there is something to suit every resident’s needs.” Joining BUPA and Birmingham Dental Hospital and School of Dentistry is Circle Health which has already started work on a state-of-the-art 19,000m2

high-quality care and excellent facilities. It will be part of their portfolio of hospitals, which includes existing facilities in Bath, Reading and Nottingham.

The new hospital will provide three operating theatres that can be expanded and reconfigured to six, an endoscopy procedure room and 18 in-patient bedrooms, packed with the latest technology, along with over 100 rehabilitation beds for patients with musculoskeletal and neurological conditions and comprehensive rehabilitation facilities. Ralph said: “It has taken years to create the right mix and bring forward ambitious plans like Circle’s new hospital, but we know the result will be outstanding. Calthorpe Estates has already invested in landscaping and infrastructure, to include a beautiful, restful tranquillity garden for visitors and the local community to enjoy. Once completed, the state-of-the art hospital will bring to Birmingham the high-quality care and excellent hospitality for which Circle Health is well-known.”

Plot 4 is the last remaining plot and has recently been granted outline planning permission to transform it into a 9000m2 facility rather than the original 5000m2

first approved back in 2014. Calthorpe has already received strong interest from potential occupiers to create a range of purpose-built, open plan medical facilities, which has driven the need for a larger facility. Ralph explained that the last pieces of the

Pebble Mill ‘jigsaw’ will feature ever more international medical and technology excellence, and businesses that align themselves to the Pebble Mill catchment cluster.

He said: “Birmingham has one of the highest performing and proven international medical catchment reputations in Europe, for quality of care, information technology, clinical education, training and research. Furthermore, it is a national centre for cancer, and world- renowned for trauma care and rehabilitation.” “We have an ambition to see proton therapy treatment develop in the region, where cancer treatment is already a significant field of specialist treatment within EMQ, and we believe Pebble Mill can play a key role in this, as we believe we can offer expansion opportunities for the local NHS Foundation Trusts, simply through our flexibility and land-holding position.”

facilities, in addition to new food and beverage space and community-accessible sporting amenities.

Calthorpe Estates also been able to

partner and support the Environment Agency through land and development at Pebble Mill, by gifting a land parcel and half of the £4 m of funds needed for a flood defence project, designed to protect local communities south of Pebble Mill. Ralph commented: “Pebble Mill resonates the huge pride we have at Calthorpe Estates, in reaching our 300th anniversary in 2017, proudly working with Birmingham City Council, who have both challenged and guided us to ensure that we provide catchment solutions at Pebble Mill. We are proud and honoured to be building a world- class destination here at Pebble Mill.” CSJ
