Association of British Healthcare Industries Improving diversity and inclusivity
As an association, ABHI are actively working to lead the HealthTech sector to improve diversity and inclusivity. It is an area of critical importance and one we are proud to be championing.
In September last year, we hosted our inaugural Women in
Leadership event. Feedback was unanimously positive, and given the level of audience engagement, we could have easily filled another three hours of discussion on the night. It was a chance for senior figures, from a range of fields, to share their broad experiences of leadership with delegates. Speakers from the world of healthcare, politics, engineering, law and the military delivered candid and enlightening tales. They also provided practical guidance on how they advanced their careers and shared their approaches to improving diversity in their respective industries. To coincide with this inaugural event, ABHI also created two diversity seats to allow the Board of Directors to co-opt two individuals with skills that would enhance the capabilities and diversity of the association’s non-executive directors. In November 2017 we were delighted to co-opt Jamie Leitner, Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer, LivaNova to the ABHI Board and Nikki West, Smith & Nephew’s Senior Vice President of Global Talent. Their leadership brings added experience on all aspects related to business practice. Six months later, and to coincide with International Women’s
Day, we hosted the second Women in Leadership event. As part of the evening, we were delighted to launch a best practice document
that shows very different perspectives on how organisations are engaging with the gender diversity agenda, both within and outside the HealthTech industry. The contributions ranged from a spotlight on the ‘HeForShe’ campaign to maternity mentoring. Speaking after the event, guest speaker Nicky Morgan MP said,
“The message from the evening was clear; with the right level of support, all women, at any career stage, can become the leader they aspire to be.” After a third networking event this June, we are already planning our next event, which will feature a document containing numerous “lightbulb moments” from our Members. These moments of sudden realisation, enlightenment and inspiration will feature examples of gender bias, based on individual experiences, be it in the workplace, or elsewhere, that have really stood out. The document is designed to be thought provoking and to encourage positive culture changes. On this important issue, ABHI are also a proud member of the 30% Club, which campaigns for greater representation of women at senior leadership and board level, with a target of a minimum of 30%. ABHI will, with our Members, continue to work on leading the industry. We hope that as our work continues, more organisations will contribute to our activities, that will allow others to learn from their approaches and experiences. Our vision is to broaden diversity and to champion HealthTech as a career choice that is built on equality. This must be implicit right across our sector. For more information, visit
