Fund for funding the theatre, which he noted proudly was Scotland’s first Olympus 4K integrated operating theatre. Prof Ali said: “It is equipped with genuinely state-of the-art technology which helps maximise surgical efficiency, enhances patient and staff safety, improves workflow, and speeds turnaround, all with a positive impact on operating times. Theatre staff can work with greater visibility and awareness, and thus with greater confidence and increased precision. Importantly, the new theatre’s equipping with the latest audio, video, and image streaming and recording technology will enhance our surgical training capability, allowing us to make a significant contribution as a centre of excellence for laparoscopic surgery. “We are now in the great position of being able to teach and share medical knowledge nationally and internationally, which will really put NHS Ayrshire & Arran on the scientific map.” Francis White, director of medical and surgical business at Olympus Medical, was the final speaker in the pre-opening presentation programme. He said: “Olympus makes some

wonderful technology, but unless it is adopted and used, all the R&D and hard work that goes into developing it is to no avail. While extremely proud of what we do technologically, our goal is for hospitals to embrace the technology we are so excited about to achieve the best possible patient outcomes. “This integrated theatre is a first for Scotland. The thinking behind such theatres is that you have one ‘brain’ controlling everything, ensuring a very slick and smooth experience for the surgical team. There is good science to show that theatre teams that collaborate with one focus achieve better patient outcomes. “Olympus, of course, has a history of making high quality visualisation equipment; people remember us for our film cameras prior to the advent of mobile phones, but in the medical business what you will see here in Ayr is our specialty – enabling surgeons and other clinicians to see the surgical field with real clarity, to be able to treat efficiently, and to have good accompanying control mechanisms.

image has four times the resolution.” Francis White explained that in addition to various ‘visualisation’ components, the new 4K theatre also features Olympus Medical’s Thunderbeat surgical dissection technology. He elaborated: “Thunderbeat is the market’s only surgical instrument system to integrate ultrasonic and bipolar therapy, the former for cutting, and the latter for sealing. This means that, with one tool, a surgeon can achieve advanced haemostasis without resorting to techniques such as stapling. This speeds up procedures, and ensures better patient outcomes. “The Endoalpha control mechanism, and notably the Olympus Medical HomeScreen touchscreen control panel, offer surgeons an easy-to-use means of adjusting everything from the lighting levels, colour, and colour temperature in the theatre, to the operation of the pendants, and which monitors display which image (in this theatre the lighting, pendants, and monitor arm are from Trilux). “Before a surgeon begins operating, he or she can simply push a button which then automatically adjusts all the parameters to their preferences. construction. He concluded: “It has been a great privilege to be able to provide the people of Ayr with this technology, and to be able to do our best work with the Health Board’s team. In turn, we hope this advanced operating theatre will allow surgeons to do their best work for patients in the local community.”

Meticulous planning

One of the Olympus Medical team attending the launch was Andy Marriott, regional sales manager for Olympus Medical North UK for surgical imaging and system integration, who led the theatre tour. He explained that creating the new theatre had necessitated meticulous planning to minimise any disruption to activity in the adjoining general theatre and two others opposite the new facility.

Olympus Medical managed and

undertook the entire project – from planning and design, to completely stripping out an existing small theatre to create space for the replacement, to installing new floors, ceiling, and walls. It also managed the installation of a complete ‘package’ of Endoalpha surgical, AV, and control equipment, and the integration of Trilux L120pm and L120pm with HD camera operating lights, Trilux L50pm ceiling-mounted examination lighting, Trilux Medidrant supply pendants, and Trilux Aurinio monitor arms. The project saw a sizeable aperture created in the wall of a corridor within the theatre block, to facilitate access both for the main contractors undertaking the ‘refurb’, and for the M&E contractor that installed and commissioned the equipment. Work on the conversion of the previous space to the new 4K integrated theatre started last September, and was completed in December, with surgery in it able to start in early 2019.
