Thanks to the evidence review, Ecolab has recently had updates to the existing pre-operative skin antisepsis portfolio. Prevase (PL 04509/0062) and Prevase Stain (PL 04509/0063) are both a single use 0.5% Chlorhexidine Gluconate w/v in 70% denatured ethanol v/v solution which have historically held a therapeutic indication for preoperative skin disinfection prior to minor surgical procedures. This therapeutic indication has since been updated to state “for preoperative skin disinfection prior to surgical procedures”. This therefore means that the Prevase and

Prevase Stain indication is no longer limited to minor surgery and now includes major surgeries as well. The updated Summary of Product

Preventing SSIs:

the butterfly effect Controversies surrounding PA and AA roles HealthTech: a lever for delivering new paradigms

pre-operative skin antiseptic by Professor Jennie Wilson, concluded2

:

l CHG is highly bactericidal at concentrations of 0.02%.

l 0.5% CHG suppresses microbial growth on skin for at least 72hrs after application.

l There is no evidence that 0.5% CHG/70% alcohol is less effective than 2% CHG in preventing surgical site infections (SSI).

l NICE and other clinical guidelines on prevention of SSI do not recommend using 2% CHG in preference to 0.5% CHG to prevent SSI.

l Higher concentrations of chlorhexidine may increase the risk of skin irritation and allergic reaction.
