These comments will assist the GMC to set the parameters of the roles and enable them to set a framework for regulation, which will in time be the benchmark not only for the regulation of doctors but also many other healthcare professionals. At the same time, the pioneers will be testing the new rules on behalf of the many professionals who will follow in their footsteps. The extra healthcare staff will add to the


general expansion of healthcare workers outlined by the Long-Term Workforce Plan. Roles in the multi-disciplinary team may be very different by 2050, but the regulation system needs to be able to flex around changing roles and expanding numbers. The teething problems being shown at present, with the Anaesthesia Associate and Physician Associate role regulation, will help to set rules for future team shapes and new professional roles.
