P RODUCT S Point-of-care calprotectin testing solution
To better support timely diagnosis, monitoring and treatment optimisation for IBD patients, the newly improved Bühlmann Quantum Blue III reader and tests provide an ideal in-clinic solution. Available exclusively in the UK from ALPHA LABORATORIES, the calprotectin experts, the system offers simple, rapid lateral flow test technology, with full
quantitation and LIMS data connectivity. The tests can easily be performed and read by healthcare personal in the clinic setting during the patient’s appointment. The ability to act on immediate results can improve patient management, save valuable resources and ease patient anxiety that inevitably comes from delay.
The Quantum Blue reader is a small, dedicated bench top instrument offering touch screen or optional bar code data entry. Results can be directly transferred to your data system, printed or downloaded to USB. For faecal or serum calprotectin assays, results are available in just 15 minutes. Tests for monitoring serum trough levels of the biologic drugs Infliximab and Adalimumab and their anti-drug antibodies are also available, giving results in one hour.
Next generation single-use bronchoscopes
The Broncoflex single-use bronchoscope, manufactured by the surgical company, Endovision, and distributed in the UK by CENTRAL MEDICAL SUPPLIES (CMS), has been improved as a direct response to technical and clinical challenges faced by healthcare providers. Unlike conventional single-use bronchoscopes, Broncoflex is available in two sizes; large (Broncoflex Vortex) and small (Broncoflex Agile). The new design is claimed to offer flexibility, cost savings and stock control improvements across all bronchoscopy therapeutic indications. Broncoflex Vortex, the larger of the two bronchoscopes, has a 2.8mm operating channel within a 5.6mm external diameter endoscope. The smaller Broncoflex Agile, has a 1.4mm operating channel and an external diameter of 3.9mm. These size changes offer a wider working channel and smaller external

diameter compared to previous versions. This reduces compatibility constraints, for example with endotracheal tubes, while facilitating ease of navigation, for example in the distal bronchi. As Broncoflex is designed for single-use there is no risk of cross-contamination and it is always ready and available for use. In addition, the quality of the bronchoscope is not affected by normal wear and tear, as often seen with conventional bronchoscopes, which ensures a high quality examination every time.
Safe critical care power for theatres
An urgent requirement for the safe supply of critical care power at Crawley Hospital has been met with an engineered solution and use of a GRP building craned onto an adjacent roof space. BENDER was approached to provide the Group 2 Medical IT Power for four operating theatres in the day-surgery unit at the hospital run by Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust. The Crawley Day Surgery Unit is located on the first floor of the hospital’s Red Wing. The compact modular Medical IT Power was built into an area close to the theatres, using Bender UK’s engineering capability to fit the equipment into limited space, and by
separating components that would normally be in a single enclosure. However, with existing buildings already at capacity, there was little space to accommodate the larger footprint modular uninterruptible battery power (UPS) that was also required. Bender enlisted UPS specialists Centiel UK and together they developed a plan to install the modular UPS in a glass reinforced polymer (GRP) building to be craned into position on a specially reinforced flat roof adjacent to the theatres, with cables linking them.

The design created allowed access for equipment and maintenance, maximising the space available, while minimising costs. The custom-built GRP building accommodates two full future- proof modular UPS systems and its own air-conditioning to maintain a stable environment. The Medical IT system included Bender’s ATICS auto-changeover system. The technology operates in conjunction with the UPS fail- safe battery back-up system to provide future-proof resilience for critical power supplies.

of COVID-19 Experts in disinfection and sterilisation, LTE Scientific offers a range of products suited to rendering Coronavirus on surfaces inactive. Its OP series of ovens and IP series of incubators operate with temperatures of up to 250°C offering the perfect environment to disable the virus. LTE also offer a range of thermal washer- disinfectors. The KEN IQ range is capable of washing and disinfecting anything from surgical tools and standard medical equipment to footwear and bowls. As standard, they have five phases comprising of a pre-wash, standard heated chemical wash, rinse, thermal disinfection and a drying phase to allow for quicker reprocessing times. The range comes complete with customisation of parameters including setting the necessary water quality, temperature and duration of each phase. Having a full process validation built in with printout facility, gives peace of mind that anything within the chamber has undergone sufficient reprocessing so that all microorganisms have been destroyed. The IQ washer disinfectors offer an effective solution in helping to prevent infection transmission within the healthcare sector and the patients environment while helping to increase departmental efficiencies.
