Contributing to a more sustainable healthcare
The COVID-19 pandemic has continued to have a high impact on Getinge from the significant routine operations and procedures backlog to the intense work to develop and manufacture COVID-19 vaccines. However, the company’s focus throughout has been to continue to support customers with products, solutions and knowledge that help save and improve more lives.
While continuing to create new products and solutions, the company is committed to contributing to a more sustainable healthcare and society, driven by the conviction that a responsible company contributes to increased value for customers as well as society at large. Over the past year, Getinge has taken quick action to develop new innovations and tailored offerings to support hospitals in tackling patient backlogs.
Support to bring down surgery backlogs
In 2020, millions of surgeries were cancelled or postponed and clearing the backlog quickly became a worldwide priority. In its efforts to provide support, Getinge looked into how to utilise data and extensive knowledge of surgery planning in order to support customers with a proactive surgical prioritisation planning solution. As a result, the innovation, Torin OptimalQ, came to life in record time – an efficient planning tool for prioritising surgical waiting lists caused by COVID-19.
“In the wake of the pandemic, we have seen the elective surgery backlog grow on a global scale and managing this is, and will continue to be, a worldwide priority,” says Mattias Perjos, president and CEO at Getinge. “Our customers need solutions for effective and efficient usage of their resources and, by offering products and knowledge that enable this, we are contributing to the greater society. For example, we introduced a new software solution innovated by our experts in just weeks, which now works as an efficient planning tool to prioritise surgical waiting lists.” Matched with patient scorings and hospital capacities, the tool calculates the preferred way to prioritise surgery schedule per theatre, week or service. Management solution if needed, helping hospitals realise even more significant improvements with accurate surgery schedules, real-time progress updates, performance analytics, and complete surgery documentation. Torin reduces administrative tasks to free up time for quality patient care. Both long term and daily planning becomes easier and more accurate, which leads to reduced waiting times and increased operating theatre utilisation. By organising the workflow within the operating theatre and to the other departments, staff have easy access to the same updated information, which reduces the need for phone coordination and minimises disruptions. Patients experience the reassurance of a well-organised, calm hospital with surgeries that run according to schedule and have the necessary resources and staff available at the right time. In order to ensure unimpeded operation, Getinge understands that tackling and prioritising surgical waiting lists isn’t the only issues many hospitals are facing. That’s why the company and its partners have also pooled their know-how to design a flexible and mobile solution: Capacity by Getinge. Irrespective of whether there is a need to increase intensive care beds at short notice, transfer one or several operating theatres

during renovations, or renovate an existing decontamination facility, the tailor-made solution ensures hospitals are not impacted further during these challenging times.
Developments in sterile reprocessing To further expand and strengthen Getinge’s chemistry and consumables business, Getinge recently acquired Quadralene, a UK based company founded in 1930, which designs, commercialises, manufactures and delivers decontamination products globally. “With the acquisition of Quadralene, we will bring additional value and support to our customers in their mission to reduce hospital acquired infections,” says Stéphane Le Roy, president, surgical workflows, at Getinge. “Quadralene has a great reputation in the field of decontamination, and we are excited that they join Getinge as the future cornerstone of our newly created Centre
