International Women’s Day Spotlight

associations and Royal Colleges have devised additions or new policies or codes of conduct.

Conclusion It is essential that regulators, hospital managers, HR bodies in NHS Trusts and training authorities actively support the changes to the culture in surgery that are required to prevent this oppressive behaviour continuing. Perhaps we all turned a blind eye or more likely did not know how devastating these behaviours could be on individuals. Many professionals probably identified the poor behaviour in theatre as ‘part of the surgical deal’ without understanding the real implications for an individual outside of the operating room., hence there is a need for education. Feeling safe at work is an important aspect

of finding it stimulating, manageable, fun and requires a supportive environment where the behaviour of others in the immediate team is not a question of tolerance. Experiences of these disturbing and potentially criminal acts mean that the individual withdraws from work, suffers burnout, as well as physical and psychological harm, which may continue to depression and worse. We must all act to prevent these incidences occurring. CSJ
