South Warwickshire Trust ramps up CT imaging capacity to meet demand
The impact of COVID-19 at South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust has increased demand for chest scans, created a backlog of routine patient scans, and increased time for cleaning scan rooms between patients. It is estimated that an extra 62 hours of CT scanning time is required per week. To meet imaging demand, NHS England has allocated Stratford Hospital with one of fifteen specially commissioned CANON Medical relocatable CT Scan Units. The cost has been met by NHS England and
NHS Improvement’s COVID-19 recovery fund. Helen Lancaster, director of operations
at the Trust, said: “Demand for CT scans has grown significantly and is unlikely to decrease given the changes required in cancer pathways and diagnostic techniques. With the added impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the Trust’s capacity to perform many diagnostic procedures, the implementation of the CT scanner at Stratford Hospital is significant in ensuring our patients are seen and treated as soon as possible. “The relocatable CT scan unit was quickly designed and manufactured at the start of the Coronavirus crisis,” commented Mark Hitchman, MD of Canon Medical. “It is a quick-to-deploy solution for hospitals needing additional imaging capacity for routine work, or a separate red / infectious zone to keep COVID-19 risk patients separate. It can be sited without building works or hospital reconfiguration in car parks.”
Reducing the risk of COVID-19 transmission
Cleaning with a natural detergent helps to remove or reduce pathogens on contam- inated surfaces, however this does not kill microorganisms. By disinfecting with a chemical disinfectant, such as chlorine or alcohol after cleaning any remaining microorganisms will be rendered inactive. LTE SCIENTIFIC offers a range of
washer-disinfectors capable of washing and disinfecting anything from surgical tools and standard medical equipment to footwear and bowls. As standard they have five phases comprising of a pre-wash, standard heated chemical wash, rinse, thermal disinfection and a drying phase to allow for quicker reprocessing times. The absolute method for the destruction of all microorganisms ultimately comes from sterilisation, with the most common form being steam sterilisation. It has been proven that by applying steam
Rapid Antigen Testing for COVID-19
COVID-19 Antigen testing just got easier. The FORTRESS Rapid COVID-19 Antigen Test, from Una Health, offers highly accurate results in just 15 minutes from a nasopharyngeal swab, for more efficient and effective treatment of Sars-CoV-2. The ability to mass test is critical if we are to control the spread of COVID-19 and rapid antigen testing should

heat at extreme temperatures, between 121˚C and 134˚C, within a pressurised environment all resistant bacterial spores in addition to fungi, bacteria, and viruses will be eliminated or deactivated. LTE’s autoclaves (steam sterilisers) are available in sizes from 23 Litres to 1050 Litres. They are supplied with a range of features including built in validation and print-out option to ensure all parameters for sterilisation have been met and recorded.
be at the forefront of these plans. Accessible, rapid near patient testing is a
powerful tool to support effective screening. As the country seeks a return to normal; antibody and antigen tests will become an invaluable tool for schools, businesses and the travel industry, as well as supporting effective infection control measures and reducing pressure in healthcare settings. Respiratory hoods for non-invasive ventilation and
CPAP The STARMED range of respiratory hoods from Intersurgical has been designed for both non-invasive ventilation (NIV) and Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy, providing an alternative patient interface to traditional masks. Offering several clinical benefits for both the patient and the care providers, the hood interface helps to overcome many of the issues experienced with both endotracheal intubation and face mask use. In light of the COVID-19 global pandemic, the respiratory hoods have been identified as an optimal tool for reducing the risk of cross infection. Owing to the semi-closed environment design and the virtually leak-free seal, all expired gas from the patient is evacuated from the internal volume through the expiratory limb of the hood, which can be fitted with an anti-viral filter. The use of the hood interface has been associated with increased patient comfort and improved NIV outcomes.
Intersurgical has recently published an online study database listing published clinical evidence on the StarMed range, providing in-depth analysis of some of the products in use in various clinical settings:
