Technical expertise required

IHEEM is seeking candidates to contribute to its Specialist Engineering Advisory Group, which aims ‘to provide information and guidance for members, and advise on matters of special interest as they arise’, including via promoting and supporting the production of technical papers, which can be printed in HEJ. The Technical Platforms (TPs) and Advisory

Groups (AGs) also comment on HTMs, HBNs, CFPPs, and other DH and Devolved Authority guidance, participate in BSI Committees and All-Party Parliamentary discussion groups, and advise the Council. Each TP and AG communicates electronically via telephone conference calling and the internet ‘to share ideas, comment on articles, and contribute information’. The Institute’s 10 current Technical

Platforms and Advisory Groups, all governed by the Technology Platform Committee, cover:

Technical Platforms  Decontamination.  Electrical.

 Medical Gases.  Ventilation.  Water.  International.

Advisory Groups  Architecture and Design of the Built Environment.

 Medical Devices.  Health and Safety.  Resilience and Sustainability.

Matthew Barker, IHEEM’s administration officer, added: “We hope the TPs and AGs will give healthcare engineers an opportunity to advise and guide on topics they feel are important, and to establish a network for sharing of expertise. If you have questions you would like answered, wish to participate, or to contribute in-depth specialist engineering knowledge, telephone: 023 9282 3186, or email: matthewbarker@iheem.org.uk” For more information on IHEEM’s

Plenty to talk about, plenty to see

Welcome to HEJ’s September 2013 issue, incorporating a sizeable conference and exhibition preview (pages 85-118) for next month’s Healthcare Estates event. 2013 has so far been an interesting, if

not a particularly easy year, for the NHS, with, for instance, February’s publication of the Francis Report highlighting significant failings in care at Stafford Hospital between 2005 and 2008, and July seeing the unveiling of the findings of a review led by Sir Bruce Keogh, the NationalMedical Director for the NHS in England, examining the quality of care provided by 14 English hospital Trusts identified as having higher than average death rates in the two previous years. Althoughmany of the issues raised related to ‘failings’ in clinical practice and management, rather than estate-related problems, both reports were widely covered, and it would surprising if the ramifications were not hotly debated inManchester. This year’s conference incorporates a

really broad spectrum of content, ranging from how to reduce carbon footprint, to wider property and premises assurance topics.

Comment Day one keynote speakers will include

David Flory, Chief Executive of the NHS Trust Development Authority, discussing ‘Estates and facilities going forward’, while second day keynote, the Chief Architect at India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Dr R Chandrashekhar, will underline the challenges of overseeing one of the country’s largest programmes of healthcare building development and renovation for many years. In the exhibition hall, meanwhile, over

180 companies will showcase their latest innovations, in many cases presenting them for the first time. Members of the HEJ editorial and advertising teams will be sharing IHEEM’s two stands, and we hope that many (existing and potential) readers, and indeed other interested professionals, will drop by to say ‘hello’, share news, pick up copies, and, if not already members, discuss the many benefits of joining the UK’s leading professional Institute for healthcare engineering and estate management personnel.
