SECURITY

Taking care of key copying in an effective way

For environments that require large and complex masterkey suites, such as healthcare estates, key control and durability are paramount considerations. Here Paul Johnson, director of Business Development for the Assa Abloy Door Hardware & Access Control Group, dispels the myth around claims of so-called ‘lifelong trademark protection’ on key profiles with regard to key copying, as compared with legally enforceable patent protection. He offers those responsible for ensuring the security of a healthcare estate a best practice guide to making an informed choice when choosing a new masterkey cylinder system.

It should go without saying that patients in hospitals and other healthcare environments have the right to feel safe and secure, and the same goes for staff and visitors. When managing a healthcare estate, it is critical to achieve the right balance between ensuring that a site is open and accessible, while prioritising safety, and deterring theft, unauthorised access, and vandalism. This last point can be a particular issue when it comes to hospitals and other healthcare facilities, with expensive equipment and drugs often a target for theft.

When looking to review a current masterkey cylinder system, or considering one for a new healthcare estate, there are a range of essential requirements that a system must meet. This includes ensuring that cylinders meet the required performance expectations, can be masterkeyed to enable controlled access throughout a site, and can be easily serviced and maintained. The criteria for making the right choice will, of course, depend on each site and building’s specific needs.

One requirement often overlooked is that of the keys supplied with a masterkey cylinder system, and the availability of additional keys moving forward.

Additional keys obtained illegally One requirement often overlooked, however, is that of the keys supplied with a masterkey cylinder system, and the availability of additional keys moving forward. With many systems, additional keys can be legally obtained without the owner’s knowledge. Nevertheless, legal protection against unauthorised key

duplication does exist – by means of patent protection – and should be considered during a risk assessment when looking to invest in a new system for a health estate. How, then, should those responsible approach choosing a new masterkey cylinder system for a healthcare site, to ensure that they are protected against unauthorised key duplication?
