The conversion of the main hall at Manchester Central to the NHS Nightingale North West Hospital was undertaken by Integrated Health Projects – the joint venture between VINCI Construction UK and Sir Robert McAlpine – under ProCure22.
May 2020 Health Estate Journal 7
Following news of the creation of England’s first three Nightingale Hospitals – at ExCeL London in the capital’s Docklands, Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre, and the Manchester Central exhibition complex (the venue for IHEEM’s annual Healthcare Estates conference and exhibition) – NHSI and NHSE announced in mid-April that further emergency hospitals would be opened in Exeter and Sunderland by early this month (May) to provide additional beds for treating patients with the coronavirus, and taking pressure off existing acute hospitals.
The announcement on the new South- West and North-East England facilities followed news from NHSE/NHSI six days previously that new Nightingale Hospitals would also be developed in Bristol – at the University of the West of England Bristol Exhibition and Conference Centre (with an initial 1,000-patient capacity), and at the Harrogate Convention Centre in the North Yorkshire spa town. Working with contractor, Kier, BDP provided the design and engineering expertise to convert the Bristol exhibition and conference facility into a temporary hospital, with an initial 300-bed capacity. ETA Projects configured HV/LV infrastructure, including integration and commissioning of new UPS and standby generators, and operational management of the electrical works, including safe systems of work, at both the Bristol and London ExCeL
emergency hospitals. The conversion of part of the Harrogate exhibition facility, meanwhile, by BAM Construction (with the support of BAM Design for structural engineering, and BAM’s specialist services engineering business), entailed creating a level three critical care field hospital able to accommodate up to 500 patients. As part of the Harrogate project, ‘from a standing start’, and using its offsite manufacturing expertise, NG Bailey prototyped and produced ‘a suite of bespoke solutions’ – which included 500 prefabricated bedhead power units, 440 pipework module units, and 70 prefabricated hot water modules.
Supplementing existing NHS hospital capacity
The new temporary COVID-19 hospital at the Washington International Advanced Manufacturing Park (IAMP) in Sunderland, NHS Nightingale North East, will initially accommodate up to 450 beds, and NHS Nightingale Exeter, around 200. NHSE/ NHSI explained that the extra capacity provided by the new Nightingale hospitals across England would supplement the 33,000 additional beds freed up across NHS hospitals nationwide, and around 8,000 beds put at the service’s disposal through a deal with the independent sector.
