‘Angel of Mostar’ will discuss her experiences in Serbia

The conference programme for Healthcare Estates 2019 is shaping up to be ‘jam-packed with content’ this year, say organisers, Step Exhibitions, and will get under way on 8 October with three keynote presentations. Alasdair Coates, CEO of the Engineering Council, will discuss the importance of engineers in the UK, Engineering Council future CPD and professional requirements, and the IHEEM/Engineering Council collaborative agenda; Professor Michael Kagioglou, dean of the University of Huddersfield, will focus on ‘NHS healthcare and infrastructure planning’, and Simon Corben, director and head of Profession, NHS Estates and Facilities, NHS Improvement, will discuss the NHS Long Term Plan and EFM Division objectives.

The ‘Angel of Mostar’

Sally Becker, ‘The Angel of Mostar’, will energise the plenary theatre on the conference’s second day – 9 October – with a motivational speech based on her experiences as an aid- worker in war-torn Serbia in the early 1990s. The keynote sessions this year will take place in the new plenary theatre on the exhibition floor. For the first time at the event, the keynotes will be open to delegates, VIPs (IHEEM members, Architects for Health members, and NHS employees), apprentices, and exhibitors.

On 8 October, the plenary theatre will also host a programme of content from IHEEM’s Diversity and Inclusion Group, ‘Embracing diversity and inclusivity into your engineering future’, with a number of inspirational speakers, including Elizabeth Donnelly, CEO of the Women’s Engineering Society, Suzie Mertes, Honoured with QPM, Superintendent, Police Scotland, and NHSI’s Fiona Daly.

This session will be open to all delegates, exhibitors, speakers, and visitors.

Critical Infrastructure Risk The NHSI Estates and Facilities Division will facilitate a Critical Infrastructure Risk workshop on 9 October in collaboration with leading IHEEM subject specialists. Open to all delegates, exhibitors, speakers, and visitors, this will provide an opportunity for participants to understand Critical

Infrastructure Risk, and how that risk is operationally managed within our hospitals.

Sally Becker.

It will be led by Adrian Eggleton, director and EFM Operational lead, NHS Estates and Facilities Efficiency and Productivity Division, and Jo Dolby, Commercial lead, both of NHSI. During this interactive session, attendees will be asked for input on the following questions:

 Are current backlog definitions fit for purpose, and if not, how can we improve them?

 Recognising that there is Critical Infrastructure Risk in the NHS estate, how do we manage that risk, ensuring patient safety and minimising impact on service delivery?

The conference will also host a session of international case studies on 9 October, ‘representing the best in hospital planning, design and maintenance’, which will be free to attend for delegates, exhibitors, speakers, and visitors. All conference presentations except the plenary sessions this year will be held in the Cobden Rooms at the front of the venue, and will be accessible via the exhibition. The theme for this year is: ‘Where Innovation, Technology, and Leadership Meet’, with four parallel conference sessions, on ‘Innovation’, ‘Planning Design, and Construction’,
