IFHE WORLD CONGRESS 2018

process recognises learning that is intrinsic to normal work routines. In this way this informal on-the-job learning can be formally recognised. Many of the IFHE member organisations are passionate about training and development opportunities for their membership, and Dr Keogh was delighted to share his experience, and was able to connect with healthcare engineering professionals from around the globe for the pilot programme that is now underway.

A lasting impact

I’d like to make special mention of just a handful of presentations that really left me, and no doubt others, with a lasting impact. Firstly, John and Sue Clynes from New Zealand communicated a very moving audio-visual presentation on their work with Mercy Ships. They considered both the engineering and the clinical feats that combined in uncertain conditions to liberate the world’s disadvantaged from debilitating disease. I note with interest two articles in the 2019 edition of the IFHE Digest authored by engineer, John Clynes, and senior biomedical technician, Tony Royston, and I encourage you to read about their experiences delivering this life- changing work. Perhaps you are up for a real sea-change? The opportunities for volunteers on board Africa Mercy are wide-ranging, and deliver real, positive,

On a similar theme of healthcare volunteering, Strategy and Programme manager, Elvina Motard, explained the breadth of engagements that Medécins sans Frontières leads around the world, demonstrating the need for autonomous and increasingly specialised services since the advent of MSF. We learned about the assortment of short and long-term

solutions that have been cleverly crafted to be deployed to any given humanitarian disaster, including with regard to facility buildings, engineering services, and energy infrastructure.
