The Principal Manchester and its ballroom – the venue for the 2019 Awards Dinner. The 2019 Awards Dinner
The Healthcare Estates 2019 Dinner and Awards this year will feature, as the guest speaker and presenter, Peter McDonald. The organisers say: “Being a bowel surgeon, Peter McDonald has a well- developed sense of humour, and typically gives his audience a glimpse into both the lighter, and occasionally the more serious, side of working in the NHS. He has been a consultant surgeon at Northwick Park & St. Mark’s Hospital for over two decades, and is a Past President of the Royal Society of Medicine, Surgery Section, and of the St. Mark’s Association. The consultant gastrointestinal surgeon tells great stories about the medical world as an insider in today’s NHS. A favourite as an after-dinner speaker, he is funny, intelligent, informative, and authentic.” Peter McDonald writes and broadcasts on medicine and health and issues facing the NHS. He published the novel A Trust in Conflict under nom de plume ‘Dr Slop’, and is the author of The Oxford
Dictionary of Medical Quotations. He has also served as Honorary Editor for the Royal Society of Medicine, and is a past Secretary of the Section of Surgery at the Royal Society of Medicine. He is chairman of the Medical Staff Committee at Northwick Park, and Sub- Dean at St. Mark’s, a specialist bowel hospital in Harrow.

Speaking honour for Legionella ‘guru’
David Harper FIHEEM, a member of IHEEM, and its forerunner, the Institute of Hospital Engineers, for nearly 45 years, and one of the world’s leading experts in Legionella, waterborne contamination prevention, and emergency response, has been invited to speak on behalf of the UK at the World Plumbing Conference in Melbourne this September. Organiser, the World Plumbing Council, has asked him to attend to share his experience in investigating outbreaks of waterborne disease, and in particular Legionella, and the key risk factors he believes are important ‘now and in the future’.
David Harper is a qualified electrician with extensive experience in healthcare engineering and estate management, but is undoubtedly best known as a
8 Health Estate Journal May 2019 leading authority on
Legionnaires’ disease, having been called upon to help with investigations in many parts of the world. As he puts it, he ‘provides the engineering expertise to a medical team which investigates via epidemiology methods’. He added: “When the problem is identified, it is my job to ‘engineer it out’”
David Harper was part of the investigating teams of the PHE and the HSE at the BBC and Stafford Hospital, and at incidents in Glasgow, London, and the North and the Republic of Ireland. He has also lent his engineering expertise in Portugal, Spain, Australia, on board Royal Navy and Merchant Navy ships, cruise liners,
submarines, and gas and oil platforms, and undertaken investigations in many countries worldwide. He has published many articles on Legionella and other waterborne disease, is registered as an Expert Witness, and was awarded the IHEEM Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012 for his work with waterborne diseases. The 12th triennial World Plumbing Conference will take place at the Melbourne
Convention Centre from 11-13 September, and will have as its theme the World Plumbing Council’s ‘Four Pillars of Plumbing Framework – Participation, Practices, Products, and Protection’.
