IFHE WORLD CONGRESS 2018

Crocodiles, culture, and international diversity

Darryl Pitcher, who took over as the IFHE’s President from Douwe Kiestra at the event, reports on a highly successful 25th IFHE Congress held in Brisbane last October, where, in addition to the human attendees, the venue – Brisbane City Hall – also welcomed a variety of Australia’s wildlife.

The IFHE’s 25th international Congress descended upon the beautiful city of Brisbane, Australia in October 2018, and with it 300 delegates and sponsors from near and far. Keynote speaker Tim Longhurst quickly deduced that some came to foreign shores motivated by the search for knowledge and engagement, while a sense of obligation moved others. Some left loved ones behind, others invited them to attend the Partners’ programme, and still others hoped love would dawn, but all enjoyed the aura created by a well-planned and flawlessly executed Congress.

Committee meeting, and the bi-annual Council meeting in the days immediately prior to the IFHE Congress, and the business of the IFHE was attended to. The Executive Committee considered the necessary business of the Federation, including budget reviews and strategic partnerships, and considered reports and activities from international member associations. Also of significant importance was the ongoing relationship with the World Health Organization and associated activities, the publication of the IFHE Digest, and a review of the previously developed Working Groups, with a special focus on the future of the IFHE.

All-day Council Meeting The all-day Council meeting was convened on Sunday 7 October, and saw 23 countries represented, together with the 11 members of the IFHE’s Executive Committee (‘ExCo’), and two observers. A full agenda was covered, and a productive meeting enjoyed. There were a number of significant matters before Council, including membership and finance reports, upcoming Congress reports for 2019 (Manchester, UK) and 2020 (Rome, Italy), and confirmation that the Council meeting for 2021 will be convened in Mexico, with thanks expressed to SMAES for this offer of support. The all-important Council decision on who is to host the 2022 Congress included presentations from

three bidding organisations from Canada, South Africa, and the US. Council decided through a ballot process to appoint Canada as the successful nominee, and thanks was expressed to both South Africa and US for the work they had put into the bid process. Reports were also provided from national member organisations, the WHO working group, and the regional IFHE-EU and IFHE- Americas organisations.

Incoming President

My own appointment as incoming IFHE President was confirmed by Council, with thanks expressed to outgoing President, Douwe Kiestra, and departing Past President, Liliana Font, who was unable to attend. Considerable work has been done by Douwe and Liliana, and I confirmed my desire to keep up the momentum of growth and improvement during my tenure as President of IFHE. In appointing the Executive Committee for the coming years, I thanked retiring ExCo member, Christian Bender, for his considerable work in furthering the objectives of the IFHE in so many parts of the globe, and for his support of the ExCo initiatives. I was happy to appoint Matthias Schwabe (Germany) to the ExCo, and also to welcome Steve Rees (from Canada) as the 2nd Vice President.
