INSTITUTE NEWS Three-day decontamination seminar

IHEEM is supporting a three-day residential seminar examining a range of key topics relating to decontamination in healthcare taking place next month at Eastwood Park Training in Falfield, Gloucestershire (pictured).

The seminar will take place from 22-24 May, and will be an opportunity for those working in decontamination management roles to hear from industry experts and discuss current issues.

Eastwood Park says the training – which will count towards participants’ CPD – will be ‘ideal’ for Authorising Engineers (Decontamination), Decontamination leads, ‘Authorised Persons aspiring to a higher level’, and decontamination management personnel. Presentations will include:

 An introduction to endoscopy auditing for JAG and other departments.

 Endoscopy auditing requirements and techniques part 1.

 Endoscopy auditing requirements and techniques part 2.

 Microbiology challenges.  Water systems, pipework, and standards for endoscope decontamination.

 Working and understanding standards as an AE (D).

 Steam sterilisation.  Tracking and traceability.  IHEEM membership.  Chemical and biological indicators.  Pharmaceutical standards – the Orange Guide.

 Quality assurance – notified bodies; what the AE (D) needs to understand.

Speakers will include:  Graham Stanton, a highly experienced IHEEM-registered AE (D), who spent 42 years in the NHS before retiring from the service, and chairs the IHEEM AE (D) Registration Board. During his time in the Welsh NHS he led audits for

the Welsh Government, and was instrumental in setting up and chairing active decontamination groups in both sterile services and endoscopy. He represents IHEEM on the Professional Bodies Group (DPECF) – a forum of representatives of the main decontamination institutes and bodies.

 Mark Walker, an experienced medical device decontamination professional and AE (D), who has several years’ experience managing Sterile Services Departments at two major London hospitals, is a decontamination and infection control trainer, and led Eastwood Park’s CSSD teaching delivery to sterile services technicians at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital Research Centre in Saudi Arabia.

 Dr Helen Griffiths, recently retired as a nurse consultant for Gastroenterology, and the National Nurse Advisor for the English Bowel Cancer Screening Programme. Lead assessor for the Joint Advisory Group for Gastroenterology (JAG), and decontamination advisor for the British Society of Gastroenterology.

 John Prendergast, who has worked for the NHS in Wales since 1986, is an IHEEM AE (D), and an active member of the IHEEM Welsh Branch. He represents Wales on the IHEEM AE (D)

Owner and senior contracts manager at Kent-based Auguste Medical Gases, David Wickenden – whose first experience in the medical sector saw him employed during the construction of Maidstone District General Hospital in 1979 – has become a member of IHEEM. He explained: “I was the youngest of four siblings born to hard-working parents, who instilled in us the need to do a good day’s work and to do it well. I like to believe I have achieved this throughout my working experience, and that I have also passed on this self- same work ethic. My father was a coded

I have followed a similar mechanical background through apprenticeship and further education. Since working on the construction of the new, then named, Maidstone District General Hospital, I have worked continuously within the medical field, although I had a short

crossover to facilities management within the banking sector at around the time of the economic crisis of 2008.

I like to think I have achieved much in our industry, and at present I own my own company in Herne Bay offering services including Authorised Person, consultation, estimating, and advisory

services. On a more personal front, I am proud to have had a rewarding 42 years of marriage to my wife Gaynor, and to have seen our two sons develop into decent, hard-working young men. ”
