Members of the winning team from St Aidan’s High School in Lanarkshire discussed what they had gained from participating in this year’s Faraday Challenge.

that would make a young patient’s hospital stay more comfortable, and less isolating, and encourage them to eat. At Finals Day, held on 29 June at The Institute in the Park next to Liverpool’s Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, the five teams were tasked with designing their prototypes from a limited range of parts set out on tables, with senior IHEEM

representatives – including CEO, Pete Sellars, and President, Paul Fenton, acting as ‘shopkeepers’. The teams not only had to ‘pay’ for the parts against a set budget, but, having completed their device, then had to present to the judges on how it would work, and its benefits – both to the young patient, and the staff caring for them. They also had to explain how

“The Institute continues to thrive to support its rising membership, and in particular this year has seen a return to in-person events, which have been an enormous success, and very much welcomed by our members. You can read more about them in the report, which I hope you find interesting and informative.” The report will be available online

well they had worked individually and collectively to meet the brief. This year’s winners – the St Aidan’s High School team – developed a fully functional ‘Munchie box’, incorporating buttons to help young patients overcome their reluctance to eat and play while in hospital. The winning team was invited to Manchester this year (see photo), and after Sir Julian Young and Paul Fenton had spoken, each team member gave their own ‘take’ on the competition, and what they had gained and learned from participating. They also confidently answered some tricky questions from the two Presidents, and the audience, on their experience and learnings, and what they would take forward from the competition, and were again applauded on winning this year’s Challenge.
