Faraday finalists’ chance to influence future hospital design

During last month’s Healthcare Estates 2022 Conference, IHEEM, the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), and the New Hospital Programme, announced that all five team finalists from the Faraday Challenge 2021/22 (HEJ – August 2022) will be offered the opportunity to transfer their winning ideas and prototypes into real tools that will be used in hospitals to help other children. They will all be invited to work with the Chief Engineer and designers from the New Hospital Programme to help develop their ideas, and bring them to life to support young patients and improve their experience whilst in hospital. Pete Sellars, IHEEM’s CEO, said: “During

IHEEM’s involvement with the Faraday Challenge, myself and Council members have witnessed a remarkable amount of aptitude, imagination, and creativity, from the students taking part. I am therefore delighted that this has been formally recognised by the New Hospital Programme, and that they have accepted our invitation to engage with the finalists. This undoubtedly means that the outputs from the challenge will endure and develop in this unique way. “One of IHEEM’s key aims is to

encourage more young people into our industry. While the Faraday Challenge has provided students with a greater understanding of the roles and functions within our sector, the ongoing partnership with IET, and now with the New Hospital Programme, will elevate and raise its profile, and promote to young people the opportunities that a career in healthcare engineering can afford. The Institute is looking forward to continuing to work alongside both organisations on this

HEJ survey – Don’t forget to have your say

As reported in September’s HEJ, the HEJ Survey is now available via the IHEEM website. IHEEM said: “Please go to https://www.iheem.org.uk/ and take a couple of minutes to complete this short but important survey, which will help us to better understand the needs of the Institute’s individual and Company Affiliate members. Thank you to everyone who filled the form in on the IHEEM and HEJ stands at Manchester Central; your support is much appreciated.”

initiative, and I am personally eager to see how the journey of all the students progresses.”

Presentations on the Faraday Challenge in Manchester A dedicated session in the Workforce steam on the morning of 4 October – the conference’s first day – saw former IET President, Sir Julian Young, and his IHEEM counterpart, Paul Fenton, tell delegates about the history and goals of the Faraday Challenge – which aims to encourage interest in engineering careers among early secondary school age children, and discuss this year’s competition – which was won by St Aidan’s High School in Wishaw, Lanarkshire. As the 2021/2022 ‘theme partner’, IHEEM set this year’s Finalists the task of designing a prototype of a device
