Last chance to contribute to IFHE Digest 2021
The International Federation of Healthcare Engineering (IFHE) has issued a final call for contributions to the 2021 edition of the IFHE Digest. IFHE Digest 2021 will examine a wide range of topics covering the optimal running of healthcare facilities. “With coronavirus affecting so many, I am sure the majority of IFHE members are actively involved in ensuring that the healthcare estates for which you are responsible continue to provide the most appropriate regime for our medical colleagues to deal with the pandemic,” said IFHE Joint General Secretary, Andy Wavell. “I hope that, this aside, many of
you will have an article tucked away waiting to be published.”
If you have a relevant technical paper of 2000- 3000 words that you would like to submit for consideration for use in the IFHE Digest 2021, send it to
editorial@ifhedigest.com, along with a selection of high- resolution images (300 dpi) at the earliest opportunity. “We appreciate that this
will be a busy time for many of you,” said IFHE Digest 2021 editor, Tim Probert. “However, if you are undertaking work that you think is important to share with your peers in the IFHE Digest, then we would like to hear from you.”
£97.1 million ambulatory care centre
Kier has been appointed by the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust to deliver a new £97.1 million Ambulatory Care and Diagnostics Centre (ACAD), procured through the P22 framework, at Heartlands Hospital in Bordesley Green East.
The construction and infrastructure provider will construct a new 18,000 m2 four-storey building that will provide
facilities including 120 consultation rooms, 26 specialist audiology and ear, nose, and throat rooms, ultrasound and X-ray rooms, and CT and MRI scanners. The new ACAD building will care for half a million patients per year, and has been designed to provide a modern, spacious environment, purpose-built to meet the needs of patients, with dementia-friendly and accessible design features. Works are scheduled to start on site this summer, with completion due in 2022. The architects are Design Buro (Coventry). Kier is currently on site delivering the transformation programme at Heatherwood Hospital in Berkshire. The £98 million programme will, it says, ‘provide first-class facilities for Ascot and the surrounding area’, with the site set to specialise in planned, non-emergency procedures.

Eastwood Park has just re-opened for training ‘as planned’ “After a considerable period of closure,
Gloucestershire-based training centre for the healthcare engineering and healthcare estate management sector, Eastwood Park, recommenced the delivery of specialist healthcare engineering, decontamination, and estates and FM training from 29 June, ‘as planned’.
As the spread of coronavirus accelerated across the UK, 22 March saw Eastwood Park postpone all planned events and training and close its main house and accommodation. The training establishment said:
14 Health Estate Journal July 2020
we are now pleased to be in a position to re-open, in line with the new Working safely during Coronavirus (COVID-19) guidance, the Government’s gradual easing of the lockdown, and the introduction of our own COVID-19 policy.” Eastwood Park says it has implemented a range of measures to safeguard learners while they carry out their essential training, including: n Social distancing in classrooms and the house.
n Reduced course numbers.
n PPE, for when social distancing is not possible.
n Separate entrances/exits and refreshment areas designated to single groups for the duration of the course.
n One-way systems. n Robust cleaning regimes. n Alternative catering options: room service and take-away lunches. While Eastwood Park was getting ready to re-open its doors, it stressed that its team is ‘here and available to support customers, albeit with some staff working from home’.
