EQUALITY & DIVERSITY
Seeing a pathway to develop Our continued work to empower and support women’s success in the NHS has delivered. In 2020/2021, our annual report showed that 54% of our workforce overall are women (see Figure 1), with women making up 57% of our executive committee. While we have achieved a lot, there is much more to do, particularly at board level, where female representation remains sub-par. We will continue to strive towards gender parity and investing in the development potential of our women. To close the article, I would like to leave you with three pieces of advice, from myself, Sally, and Jo, which we would give to our younger selves, and offer for all women starting out in the industry.
Advice to women from women at NHSPS
Rina Pandya: “Build your network and personal brand – it is a cliché, but important. Be yourself and be authentic. Don’t pretend to be someone
else. Don’t be shy about being ambitious. Learn to take control of your own career. Focus on your own development, and lean on mentors and role models to guide you along the way.”
Sally Tombs: “Take pride in what you deliver. Be proactive in everything you do. Consistently prove that you are good at what you
do, and ultimately remember what the end-goal is. For everybody at NHSPS it is to ‘Enable excellent patient care’.”
Jo Tuck: “Having confidence is key to get the career you want. I approached someone about a vacancy, and if I hadn’t have done that I
wouldn’t have progressed. Confidence in what you’re talking about is key. You are the right person for the job; know that and you’ll do it. That earns respect.”
