IFHE NEWS

Comment from the IFHE President Extremely active despite pandemic “Historically,” writes current IFHE

President, Daniela Pedrini, “the President has the opportunity to speak to many associates of the IFHE member associations on many occasions during their two-year term. Clearly, with the outbreak of the pandemic this hasn’t been possible during my tenure, and, in the absence of congresses and international travel, we’ve been limited to videocalls, and have missed the chance to talk face-to-face, in the informal way we all enjoy. “As a result of not being

able to have our usual regular face-to-face contact, and the lack of opportunity to make new acquaintances in person, I decided to set up one-to-one calls with all my fellow Exco members in order to try to reclaim some of that intimacy that you often miss in a large video group setting. The overarching goal was to talk in depth about the issues that the national

associations consider important for the international federation. This was a way to get closer using the communication technology available to us, and indeed use of videocalls and meetings via such online tools as ‘Teams’ and ‘Zoom’ has become very much the standard way to exchange views and thoughts. This will inevitably continue into the future, even after the pandemic is over, and travel restrictions have eased.

Transforming and repurposing spaces “Since the Spring of 2020, healthcare professionals have faced huge challenges. We’ve transformed and repurposed the spaces in our hospitals and healthcare facilities, while looking to avoid undue risks for our staff, and being aware of climate change, as well as the need for energy efficiency, and to operate in as sustainable a way as we can. “IFHE has been extremely active, and has got involved in

many activities around the world, starting with the success of our first online congress. We hadn’t expected the reach, the number of countries participating, or the reliability of the technology, but I was so proud of the team that managed to build this congress, and I’d also like to thank those who took time to give their advice and feedback to create this event at such a challenging time. “I have been delighted to see IFHE

involvement in WHO projects around the world. The ability to mobilise healthcare engineers so quickly to assist with urgent projects has been very impressive, and we hope to continue the collaboration that we’ve started on this front. “We have initiated a new

communications strategy, which is designed to improve members’ experience. A newsletter has been released periodically, and in this we hope to feature not only IFHE news, but also to spread the news of our national associations, be it about their research, congresses, or other events. “In the past year, we’ve seen the

emergence of our important new IFHE Energy Awards, with the first winners to be recognised at our upcoming congress in Toronto in September 2022.” (See also page 20.)
