(pellet measuring device). The device takes pelletised material from the classifier at the end of the extrusion process and delivers a steady stream of pellets at the proper distance from the Spectro sensor to allow a consistent colour measurement of compounded colour. The measured pellets are then returned to the process, and any deviation from the defined colour tolerance is detected so that it can be quickly corrected. The LIAD Smart SpectroMetric line of technolo- gies can be retrofitted onto existing extrusion lines. The system is sized based on the size and through- put of the extrusion line.
Recovering pigments A new project underway at Utrecht University in the Netherlands seeks to develop technologies to recover inorganic pigments and organic dyes from polyesters, such as PET bottles, and reuse them in recycled materials. The five-year project, headed by Bert Weckhuysen, Distinguished University Profes- sor of Catalysis, Energy, and Sustainability in the Institute for Sustainable and Circular Chemistry, is funded by a grant from Circular Plastics NL. In addition to the university, the consortium includes
masterbatch supplier Holland Colours and CuRe Technology, which (via a different consortium) invented a process for what it calls polyester rejuvenation. The researchers sort the coloured PET bottles, dissolve them in bio-based solvents, and separate the colorants from the polymer. Spectro- scopic techniques are used to identify intact colorant molecules that could be reused.
