Colour correction The Ampacet LIAD Smart SpectroMetric 6, introduced last year, is designed to enable closed- loop colour correction. A sensor measures colour variation in real-time, and patented correction algo- rithms calculate how the colour needs to be adjusted to bring the colour back into specification using LIAD Smart feeders and mono-pigment concentrates. The automated system allows companies to maintain high operational efficiency, especially when compounding with PCR resins. “The challenge for PCR compounders and
recyclers is that PCR resins vary in colour from even within the same lot of material and lot-to-lot, which makes [achieving] a consistent colour compound
very difficult,” said Doug Brownfield, Commercial Director for Ampacet. He noted that the colour can shift at any time during production. Typically, a line operator will need to continually correct the colour by adjusting the letdown ratio of the colour masterbatch or toner to offset the colour shift. Often the solution is to increase the let-down ratio, which increases colour cost. In addition, the process of adjusting the colour can cause a high level of scrap and expensive downtime, Brownfield said.
Real time “The SpectroMetric in-line colour correction technology produces a closed-loop system that makes the proper adjustments to the colour deviations in real-time. No line operator involve- ment is required,” he added. Ampacet is seeing good results with the colour correction system. “A [US]-based PCR compounder of black PP who has implemented two SpectroMetric systems has dramatically reduced their usage rates of black masterbatch while maintaining greater control,” Brownfield said.
