new additive is based on the company’s Dover- phos LGP12, which is a liquid secondary antioxi- dant that was introduced as an alternative to TNPP more than a decade ago. Shawn Cook, Technical Manager for Plastic Additives at Dover Chemical, said that the additive is optimally added during compounding of the recycled material to prevent gels in subsequent extrusion processing. For example, in film extru- sion, data showed that LGP12 could prevent or reduce large gels that can cause tears in films. In a large trial, LGP12 nearly eliminated gels in a compound made with PIR material and significantly reduced them in a compound made with PCR material (see chart on previous page). In addition to acting as an antioxidant to prevent polymer degradation, the additive has a lubricating effect that can further prevent larger gels by reducing material-hangups in dead-spots, said Cook. DoverClear is offered as a masterbatch of up to 8% loading, with typical final product loadings of 0.5-4%. It has FDA food-contact approval in LLDPE and HDPE.
Baerlocher’s Baeropol T-Blends are a family of multifunctional stabilisers intended to be added to
PCR for improving quality or allowing increased PCR content in products. T-Blends for PE films can reduce additional gel formation and provide a more stable melt flow, for example. T-Blend 1111 TX for HDPE PCR used in blow molded bottles also provides more stable melt flow, minimises yellow- ing in natural (unpigmented) compounds, and may improve the mechanical properties of the end product. The additives are available as 100% active-content, dust-free pastilles that can be dosed alone or dryblended with masterbatch or polymer.
At K2022, SI Group launched its Evercycle family
of additives for recycled PET or polyolefins. Evercycle LD-101S, an easy-to-dose, non-dust- blend (NDB) is designed for LDPE/LLDPE streams, such as flexible packaging, to protect the polymer during mechanical recycling. “When dealing with post-consumer streams, it is important to prevent gel formation as early as possible during the recycling process,” said Jeroen Frederix, Market Development Manager, Circular Economy, for SI Group. “This NDB offers mechanical recyclers the opportunity to produce higher quality recycled resin by preventing polymer degradation and gel
