tions, such as blow-moulded HDPE containers. The company reports that it provides high protection of colour and mechanical properties by reducing significantly thermo-oxidative degradation during processing and long-term use. This benefit is useful in mechanical recycling, as well.

Additives, at BASF. However, in cases where such pre-stabilisation is not possible, re-additivation in the recycling step can help prevent degradation. “Most virgin polymer systems are not designed

and sufficiently stabilised for multiple uses,” said Heitkamp. “Even if the [compound containing recyclate] contains a proportion of virgin grades, it is recommended that the additional stabilisation system be rejuvenated to avoid potential deficien- cies in processing or final applications. This is also to prevent premature degradation of the recyclate, and to avoid accelerated degradation of the virgin content.” BASF’s IrgaCycle, part of the company’s Valeras

portfolio, consists of a series of plastic additive formulations that enable recycled plastics to be used for the production of high-value parts in combination with virgin materials. Clariant’s new AddWorks PKG 158 is a blend of high performing and synergistic primary and secondary antioxidants for rigid polyolefin applica-

Recycled polyolefins Another Clariant stabiliser, Addworks PKG 906 Circle, allows increased levels of recycled resin, such as in-house trim or off-spec, in both cast and blown PP and PE film processes without loss of quality or production efficiency. The company says it is especially suited for biaxially oriented PP (BOPP) production, and that it can reduce gels, black spots and film breaks. Clariant’s ‘Circle’ designator, launched in 2019, indicates products that have been specifically designed to benefit re-use or recycling. Adeka’s ADK CycloAid one-packs are fit for

different streams of recycled polymers. ADK CycloAid UPR-001 is a blend of additives to improve the thermal stability of recycled PP and PE. ADK CycloAid UPR-011 is a nucleating agent with antioxidants designed to improve mechanical properties of recycled polyolefins, so that more recyclate can be used in a blend of recycled and virgin PP, for example. Gels in recycled plastic compounds are a

perennial issue that causes problems in subse- quent converting processes. Gels can come from physical contamination, such as wood or dirt particles; from contamination with a different polymer that doesn’t melt in the mix; or from degraded or crosslinked polymer. The latest additive from Dover Chemical is DoverClear 800, a recycling-grade antioxidant that prevents this latter type of gels from degradation and stabilises melt flow in compounds that contain recyclate.
