New recyclability protocols for automotive and E&E plastic applications


European standardisation platform RecyClass has published the first set of Recyclability Evaluation Protocols for Automotive and Electrical & Electronic Equipment sectors. Established in collaboration with the plastic value chain and based on European state-of-the-art recycling infrastructure, the protocols focus on polymers that are commonly recovered and recycled in these industries: PP, mineral-filled PP, ABS, PS, PE and PC-ABS. “RecyClass is more committed than ever to driving the transition


to a circular plastics economy across all sectors,” said Tom Caris, Chairman of the Automotive and EEE Technical Committee at RecyClass. “Further protocols are under development and will be released next year.” A new protocol on multi-component materials is currently in the


pipeline. This protocol will assess how different polymers and materials in vehicles or electrical and electronic appliances can be separated during the recycling process, as well as how assembly choices impact the overall recyclability of plastic components.

Headlamp project Covestro reported progress in April regarding its work on recycled polycarbonates made from end-of-life automotive headlamps. Developed through a joint program initiated by the German federal enterprise GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit), with Volkswagen and NIO as key partners, the new PC grades contain 50% recycled content and are now com- mercially available for new automotive applica- tions.
