Tight supply situation is hurting EU processors

Material shortages and price rises are seriously impacting production at EU plastics processors, says industry organisa- tion EuPC. The European market for polymers has been under pressure for several months, it said, and processors all over Europe have reported difficulties in getting the necessary raw materials to keep their production running, along with low stocks.

EuPC Managing Director

Alexandre Dangis said: “Since December 2020, the situation worsened rapidly. Additionally, extreme weather conditions in the

situation is further aggra- vated by shortages in shipping containers. As a result of all these factors, it said prices for polymers have risen to very-high levels, which has limited credit facilities for processors, and reduced the

USA lead to production losses also affecting the European market. In addition, European [poly- mer] producers have also been declaring increased numbers of Force Majeure cases in the past months, as the Polymers for Europe Alliance reported already in January.” The organisation said the

already small margins of converting companies. EuPC said it is calling upon its partners in the European polymer produc- tion industry to work together with their European customers to resolve the situation as soon as possible in order not to put supplies of essential goods at risk. www.plasticsconverters.eu

Paccor invests in new machinery

Paccor is to invest more than €40m this year in response to demand for sustainable food packaging during the COVID-19 pandemic. It will complete a project to increase capacity at its production site in Ravensburg, Germany, and will also invest in automation,

logistics and new technology. Specifically, the company will add new injection moulding capacities, notably in-mould labelled PP cups and two-coloured lids. www.paccor.com

Rosti plans Boston digital lab

Plastic injection moulding company and contract manufacturer Rosti Group is to open a digital innovation lab in Boston, US. This follows on from labs in Europe and Asia, to which it will be connected for 24/7 development. It is

planned to be completed in the second quarter. The Swedish company

said that the lab will “provide proximity to the expanding customer base of American clients with the facilities to develop prototype moulding in design intent materials using 3D printed tooling technol- ogy”. It selected Boston for proximity to existing customers in the medical device manufacturing sector in Massachusetts. Digital innovation labs

are part of Rosti’s 72-hour “from concept to reality” process. www.rosti.com

Injection World publishes 100th edition October 2009

Injection World has reached the milestone of 100 editions with this March 2021 issue of the magazine. The first edition was published in October 2009, with features on caps and closures, thermally conductive compounds and used machinery. The launch issue was timed to appear just ahead of the moulding-oriented Fakuma 2009

exhibition, marking the magazine’s intent to provide injection moulders with focused news and features on their industry and the technology and materials they use. Much has happened in the world since 2009 and the plastics industry has had to face challenges brought about by global economic downturns, tightening regulation and market shocks. The impact of Covid-19 has seen injection moulders and other plastics processors dealing with disrupted supply chains and rising to the challenge of producing vital medical and safety products in high volume and at fast rates. You can look back at the Injection World archive and find out more about AMI’s five magazines at www.injectionworld.com.
