one current partner in Europe which is planning to use process water as feedstock at a plant with 1,500 tonnes/year produc- tion capacity. Paques and another partner, Looop, have signed a deal to produce PHA from agri-food waste streams at a plant with a capacity of 3,000-6,000 tonnes/year. The Paques plant in Emmen has started small- scale operations from 25 kg/ day but the company is expecting to scale up the plant. Bio-based milestone Polyolefins producer Braskem is celebrating the 15th anniversary of its I’m Green bio-based polyethyl- ene (PE) portfolio, and further developing it with a 37% expansion in produc- tion capacity at its green ethylene unit in Brazil. Walmir Soller, CEO, said:

“The expansion of our bio-ethylene unit in 2023 was a significant step forward in our mission to support the industry and brand owners on the sustainability journey, and it brings us closer to our goal of becoming carbon-neutral by 2050.” Braskem’s sugar cane-

sourced ethylene is said to offer the same quality and versatility as fossil-based products, but with the added benefit of capturing around 2 tonnes of carbon dioxide for every tonne produced. Total production capacity for green ethylene now stands at 275,000 tonnes/year.

Expanded PLA TotalEnergies Corbion and Useon have teamed up to develop and commercialise PLA foam technology. Expanded PLA (EPLA) is an industrially compostable material that is designed for packaging, thermal protec- tion and other moulded applications. It combines Useon’s direct bead foaming technology with TotalEner- gies Corbion’s Luminy PLA.

EPLA foam products are lightweight, protective, and durable — making them suitable for packaging, food service, and cold-chain applications. It breaks down into water, carbon dioxide and biomass when industri- ally composted. “With EPLA, businesses now have access to a foam material that performs well and aligns with growing regulatory and consumer

demand for circular alterna- tives” said Chen Zhiqiang, CEO of Useon. Under the agreement, both companies will promote EPLA technology globally, share application developments and collabo- rate on new product innovation. Hao Ding, global market-

ing director of TotalEnergies Corbion, added: “Useon’s technical leadership in foam
