MULTI-LAYER PACKAGING | MATERIALS

Bostian, senior research & development fellow at US film manufacturer Charter Next Generation. He said there are several options that can potentially solve the problem, which are: down- gauging or lightweighting; using bio-based materials; using recyclate; mono-material solutions, such as all-PE designs; and using compostable materials. “We need to replace PET and OPP – which are

clear, stiff, strong, glossy, and heat resistant,” he said. “But how are we going to do that in PE – when we are losing 60F of heat resistance over OPP and 230F over PET?” He said ‘all-PE’ packaging such as blown films can be made to work, but have clarity and stiffness issues. Similarly, BOPE is not a simple answer. “It’s tough to do, especially at the higher densities needed to get maximum heat resistance,” he said. “But progress will continue.” In addition, he said sealant films need to change – with lower seal initiation temperatures (SITs) that match up with PE print webs. Films also need to be tougher, to make up for strength lost going from biax films to MDO print webs. “These give us basic PE print webs and PE

sealants, but don’t have all the functionality we need,” he said. “There’s no oxygen barrier, and the moisture barrier may not be good enough for some applications.” He said that mono-PE solutions must meet all these needs “if we are going to replace current mixed material packaging”. He said that CNG’s GreenArrow PE films include

all-PE, PCR-based and compostable/bio-based films. n The next edition of Multilayer Flexible Packaging is held on 10-11 December 2025 in Vienna, Austria. For more details, contact Carole Charrade on +44 (0) 117 314 8111 (carole.charrade@amiplastics.com).
