EXTRUDER OF THE MONTH

CMI Plastics Head office:

CEO: Founded:

Ownership: Employees: Profile:

Ayden, North Carolina, USA Stephen Hasselbach 1939

Private Around 70

CMI Plastics was founded in 1939 as a manufacturer of balsa wood model aeroplanes. The plane canopies were originally made individually from X-ray film – but were later thermoformed in order to boost efficiency. This then evolved into making thermoformed blister packaging – until the company’s whole focus was packaging. Now, it supplies thermoformed products to end markets including automotive, consumer products, food and medical.

Product lines:

The company’s custom thermoformed products include blister packaging, clamshell packaging and thermoformed trays. In addition, it offers tooling and design services – promising rapid prototyping turnaround times. Its blister packaging is typically used in retail environments, for products ranging from toys and sweets to power tools. Clamshells can similarly be used to contain a variety of end products. Its products are typically supplied into its four key end markets.

Factory location:

The company’s manufacturing facility in Ayden, North Carolina uses 14 high-speed inline thermoforming machines with robotic automation. It is in the process of nearly doubling the size of the facility – from 70,000 sq ft to 130,000 sq ft. The company says that the expansion strengthens logistics, tooling, and manufacturing – while maintaining product quality. In addition, it expects the US$5 million investment to add around a dozen jobs to the workforce.
