Industry partners expand availability of BOPE-HD film
Nova Chemicals, with industry partners, says it has increased the global availability of biaxially oriented high-density poly- ethylene (BOPE-HD) film. Using Nova’s resin, biaxial film manufacturers have produced BOPE-HD film on commercial tenter frame lines. The film is a recyclable alternative to traditional, mixed-material films for flexible packaging – and can help to extend the life of plastic packag- ing and eliminate waste,

Surpass TX150-A resin in 2020, Nova formed relation- ships with biaxial film manufacturers to deliver the BOPE-HD films to market. The collaborators include Inteplast (USA), JK Materials (South Korea), Oben Group (Ecuador) and Polivouga (Portugal). “Producing BOPE-HD film was not a simple process,” said Rafael Bayona, director of research and develop- ment and technology at

Inteplast. “This was a major transformation that de- manded persistence and dedication.” Aurum Process Technol-
ogy, a packaging company in Spain, used BOPE-HD to enhance its aseptic indus- trial cooking and packaging method, called T-Sensation. This resulted in finished particulate food, ready meals, and pet food in recyclable, mono-material packaging. Several of the partners
have presented BOPE-HD products at the Interpack show in Germany. “The successful launch of these films relied on the collaborative efforts of all the players involved, including equipment manufacturers, film convert- ers, and product packag- ers,” said Owen Lightbody, team leader of application development at Nova. �

FLEXPACK Ultra-thin film contains 50% recyclate
Ineos has produced an ultra-thin, rigid film for making recyclable flexible packaging – which contains more than 50% recycled plastic. The company says this is the first time such a high proportion of recycled waste plastic has been used in packaging products. The company’s polymer know-how – coupled with Hosakawa Alpine’s machine direction orientation (MDO) technology – have come together to

process Recycl-IN resins containing more than 50% recycled plastic into polyethylene film. This new film is used to manufacture single-polymer flexible packaging products to replace multi-material equivalents. The Recycl-IN product range compounds recycled plastic waste with highly engineered new resins. It helps converters and brand
owners retain the high quality of their products while increasing recycled
content, it says. The announcement follows the company’s investment in a Hosakawa Alpine MDO film line to develop flexible, mono-material packaging films. The demonstration shows that
Recycl-IN can be applied to film extrusion applications such as MDO polyethylene. It enables advanced technical film applications to use mechanically recycled polyethylene. �

Multi-wall PC sheet expanded
Exolon has expanded its range of heat-insulating polycarbonate multiwall sheets.
Its multi UV Hybrid-X (HX) is now also available in a thickness of 50mm and completes the HX multiwall sheet family, which already includes 25, 32 and 40mm thicknesses. The HX structure enables maximum insulation while reducing energy con- sumption, says Exolon. The sheet thickness
improves thermal insulation, with a Ug value of 0.85 W/m 2 K, and extends the applica- tion possibilities of the multiwall sheet due to its load bearing. Exolon multi UV
