Sustainable barrier At the Thin Wall Packaging event in November, Souvik De and Yasuhiro Hirano of Mitsubishi Chemical presented details of how the company’s Soarnol (EVOH) and Nichigo G-Polymer (BVOH) can be used to create sustainable multilayer barrier packaging.
Soarnol is already commonly used as a gas barrier within packaging structures. It can be tweaked so that it has either a higher barrier or
reduce the thickness of this layer within a packag- ing structure. At the same time, regrind from waste such as thermoforming scrap can be incorporated into a new, partially recycled barrier layer in new packaging. “Soarnol EVOH resins with an ethylene content over 29mol% can be considered as compatible for polyethylene film recycling,” said the presenters. In addition, multilayer packaging film with up to 15 wt% Soarnol can be fully recycled in the presence of the company’s Soaresin recycling additive, they added.
