NEWS PP recycling increases in US

The Recycling Partnership says that polypropylene (PP) recycling is increasing in the US. Since its creation in 2020, it has given out 60 grants worth US$15 million across – resulting in new or improved PP recycling access to 48 million people, it claims. In its first report, its Polypropylene Recycling Coalition says that an extra 64 million lbs (29,000 tonnes) of PP has been recycled each year. In one example, it says a grant

Double- wall pipe’s

3in version KPS has developed a 3in (110/90mm) double-wall HDPE piping system. It is designed for medium to high flow applications on forecourts, data centres and genera- tors, including fuel and vapour lines where high standards are required, said the company. Certified to EN 14125, it comprises a 90mm primary containment pipe and a 110mm secondary containment pipe, giving an extra layer of protec- tion and enabling interstitial monitoring. The zero-permeation design includes an EVOH layer, for sensitive liquids such as fuels and chemicals. “This new system has the same easy-install conductive properties that KPS piping is known for,” according to Staffan Helleday, product manager at KPS. https://kpspiping.com

allowed the Northern Recycling Center in New Jersey to upgrade equipment – allowing it to collect more PP and sell it to multiple domestic buyers. “In four years, we have improved

PP recycling in more than half of US states, and there is more to do,” said Brittany LaValley, vice president of materials advancement. “We know there is significant opportunity to continue to expand the demand for recycled PP.”

The organisation aims to drive a 5%

increase in the US PP recycling rate by increasing community recycling programme acceptance, ensuring more recycling facilities can success- fully sort PP, and supporting responsi- ble end markets. Achieving this will require deploying US$10 million in new capital in 2025 – part of a strategy to deploy US$55 million to modernise recycling infrastructure and expand PP capture nationwide. https://recyclingpartnership.org

ADS sees first half sales rise, while profits take a tumble

US-based pipe manufacturer ADS saw sales rise – but profits fall – for the first half of the year. Sales rose by 2.5% to around US$1.6 billion. At the same

time, profit fell nearly 6% to around US$294 million. Domestic sales of pipe rose by 0.6% to around US$842m. At the same time, international sales fell by around 4%, to around US$114m. “Continued choppiness in the non-residential end market impacted revenue from both pipe and allied products” said Scott Barbour, chairman and CEO of ADS. “Combined with significant storm events, this resulted in revenue flat to the prior year.”

Based on a current assessment, the company expects net sales for the full year to be at least US$2.9bn – a flat perfor- mance compared to the previous year. www.adspipe.com

Partnership looks to recycle PEX

Aduro Clean Technologies and GF Building Flow Solutions Americas are to investigate how to turn crosslinked polyethylene (PEX) production waste into valuable raw materials. GF supplies Uponor-

branded products – includ- ing PEX pipes. The agree- ment will look to use Aduro’s Hydrochemolytic

Technology (HCT) to chemically recycle PEX waste into polymer feed- stock.

Initial results from a technical evaluation have shown that the technique can break PEX down into a raw material for the manu- facture of ethylene. “We are excited to build on our previous success in

breaking down Uponor PEX waste into raw material,” said Ofer Vicus, CEO of Aduro.

“Our goal is to investi-

gate a potential commercial scale solution for GF’s cross-linked polymer waste stream.” www.adurocleantech.com www.georgfischer.com www.uponor.com
