Seeking stability in adverse environments
New light stabilisers and antioxidant additives aim to meet tougher performance and regulatory requirements. And suppliers have formed a global alliance. Jennifer Markarian reports
One way to reduce plastic waste is to choose durable applications and create plastics that last longer in their intended use. Antioxidants (AOs) and ultraviolet light stabilisers (LS) play an impor- tant role in preventing polymer degradation and extending product life. Stabilisers enable plastics to function in growing markets, such as agricultural films and photovoltaic panels. Outdoor applica- tions like these must withstand conditions such as increasingly severe weather and temperatures. Additive suppliers are working on new technolo- gies to better prevent degradation and comply with chemicals regulations. A new global industry group, the Global
Antioxidants and Light Stabilisers Alliance (GALA), was launched in early July to strengthen industry advocacy and support the safe and sustainable use of these additives, as chemical regulatory frame- works continue to evolve across regions. The group, which represents AO and LS producers and

stakeholders, covers a wider geographic range than the former European-based ELiSANA initia- tive, which is no longer active. “With international membership and a strong
leadership team, we are well positioned to engage effectively with regulators and relevant supply chains to promote the safe and sustainable use of these essential substances worldwide,” said Thomas Schmutz, Leader Technology, Regulatory Affairs & Sustainability at Songwon and chair of the new group. Other members of the steering committee include Vice-Chair Mira Cancara (BASF) and Secretary Dieter Drohmann (Consortia Manage- ment, a subsidiary of the Chemservice Group). “GALA members unite the collective expertise
on AOs and LS to address the product challenges our industry faces. Through dedicated task forces focused on specific technical topics, we will generate the scientific data that will drive better decisions across our industry,” said Henry Luo,
