RECYCLING | ADDITIVES
Ampacet Slip Scavenger 1540 is engineered specifically for flexible packaging using post-consumer recycled polyethylene
lio. The additive enables consistent coefficient of friction in flexible films with high PCR content, which enables higher levels of recycled content to be used without machinability issues. The company explained that variable PCR sources may contain high slip levels that can make films too slippery, which is a particular problem in stack stability. The new masterbatch captures migrating slip additive molecules during pelletising or when blending high slip rPE into new films. Holland Colours announced last
year that two of its additive technologies, CircStab and LightGuard, had success- fully passed the RecyClass Recyclability Evaluation Protocol for PET bottles, demonstrating compatibility with PET bottle recycling processes. HolcoPET CircStab, which uses SI Group’s EverCy- cle technology, stabilises PET during recycling by preventing yellowing while preserving brightness and viscosity, the company said. LightGuard 400 blocks UV light to protect light-sensitive contents of transparent PET bottles from photodegradation. For recycled white opaque PET
(rPETo) packaging, challenges include consistent colour and light protection. Since both mono and multi-layer opaque PET bottles are in the recycle stream, the output can appear greyish, the company said. In addition, rPETo can lose brightness and light protec- tion. Holland Colours’ Holcopearl ReWhite restores both whiteness and

light protection, enabling rPETo to meet strict requirements. Holcopearl ReWhite is added during preform injection moulding and ISBM bottle manufactur- ing and enables closed-loop recycling for white PET dairy bottles. Markers or taggants in plastic compounds have been used for traceability and anti-counterfeiting efforts and can also be used to enhance efficient and accurate sortation of recycled materials. For example, the Tracer-Based-Sorting solution from Polysecure can be used as an option with the company’s Sort4Circle single-step, multi-sensor sorting process. Food-contact ap- proved fluorescent marker particles can be added to the plastic com- pound and then later detected by sensors in the sorting equipment, allowing closed-loop recycling.
