FAKUMA 2021 | EVENT PREVIEW
Fakuma 2021 - Europe’s moulding show is back
The Covid pandemic forced the cancellation of last year’s Fakuma trade fair but it’s back for 2021. We look at some of the new technologies that will be presented in Friedrichshafen this month
The Fakuma trade fair has long been a landmark event for the European plastics industry — espe- cially for the injection moulding and compounding sectors — so the forced cancellation of the 27th show last year due to the Covid pandemic travel restrictions was a disappointment to many. How- ever, as travel restrictions ease the show is back and organiser PE Schall says some 1,900 exhibitors will be showing off their products and services and welcoming visitors to their stands at Messe Friedrichshafen in Germany from 12-16 October. As in the past, Fakuma presents an opportunity
for Europe’s machinery suppliers to present the results of their development activities, many of which have continued or even accelerated during the pandemic, according to Sandra Füllsack, Managing Director of Motan and spokesperson for the Fakuma exhibitor advisory committee. “Every crisis presents opportunities as well, and many a clever mind is taking advantage of them,” she says. Clearly, the show will not be quite the same as the last event in 2018 (Fakuma takes place annually in the years between Germany’s global K fair). That saw a near record attendance of 47,650 visitors, according to the organiser. This year’s event is unlikely to get close to that figure. And there may not be so many ‘live’ exhibits as usual. KraussMaffei, for example, decided not to

have machinery running on its stand this year but instead to present its technology digitally. Others may also make more use of digital exhibits. That aside, there will still be plenty of running machinery across the exhibition centre, ensuring the show remains one of the key meeting points for Europe’s plastics injection moulding industry. Organiser PE Schall has emphasised the safety
measures it will be taking. These hygiene and safety procedures have been developed by Messe Friedrichshafen in coordination with the authorities in the State of Baden-Württemberg. “As the promoters of Fakuma, we’re fully aligning ourselves to the protection and hygiene concept adopted by the Friedrichshafen Exhibition Centre,” says Bettina Schall, PE Schall Managing Director. Over the following pages, we highlight some of the innovations that may be of interest to com- pounders planning to make their way to the event.
