Traditional HFFR compounds perform better during flammabil- ity tests, but are typically character- ised by lower oil and wear resist- ance and mechanical performance in general. These limitations can be overcome by replac- ing traditional crosslinkable cable compounds or traditional HFFR compounds by crosslinkable flame retarded alternatives. The steady expansion of photovoltaic technol-
ogy, as well as growth in electric mobility markets, are contributing to increasing demand for crosslinkable HFFR cable compounds, says Loviat. The Construction Products Regulation (CPR) and the latest specifications for automotive and rolling stock cables are requiring better performing materials, driving in turn further development of higher performance compounds and more efficient compounding technologies.
Production of silane crosslinkable flame
retardant cable materials is usually carried out in two steps. The first is grafting of the basic polyolefin polymer with silane and peroxide. The second is compounding of the grafted material with the flame retardant additive/filler. Although this well- established process works, it is relatively
inefficient and cost intensive because the material must be melted and pelletised twice and requires either two compounding machines, or alternate production cycles on a single machine. In co-operation with Evonik and Martinswerk, Buss has developed an efficient one-step process. Already in operation on an industrial scale at some of the main producers of XL-HFFR, the company claims a significant competitive advantage in terms of productivity and product quality, as well as in energy consumption.
