to directly support our customers by accelerating their product development processes with measur- able data they would not have had access to in-house,” said Dr. Jeanette Hanna, Biopolymers Market Development Manager for North America. The North American lab is part of a broader network of similar labs at BASF globally. “For BASF to develop fully biodegradable products for our customers, this requires a fundamental understand- ing of chemistry and of biological processes combined with digital tools. It is essential to test these products under various framework condi- tions, which, among others, means, in different environments around the globe,” said Prof. Andreas Künkel, Vice President, Biopolymers Research in Ludwigshafen, Germany. BASF’s global investment in analytical methods to study chemistry at the molecular level allows for development in detection and characterisation methods for microplastics. This work has led to multiple publications reflecting that intrinsically biodegradable components used to make com- postable products do not cause persistent micro- plastics. “From the technical perspective, we are advanc-

ing cutting edge analytics and sound scientific breakthroughs in the field of microplastics and biodegradables while we support our customers’ needs,” said Dr. Jeanne Hankett, Manager of the Center of Excellence. “By advancing our under- standing of current materials and the characterisa- tion techniques needed to examine next genera- tion materials, we help pave the way for increasingly sustainable products. This same logic can be applied towards advocacy – through extensive external collaborations, colleagues help us drive the development of increasingly circular products and processes.”
