Spectro PMD from Ampacet LIAD for inline colour measurement
Device) and SpectroMetric PMD. “Maintaining consistent colour in recycled plastics, such as PCR and PIR materials, as well as compounds and masterbatches, is challenging due to raw material variability,” said the company. The Spectro PMD analyses granules during the extrusion process and, paired with SpectroMetric PMD’s automated colour correction, Ampa- cet says “the systems provide real- time visibility and control, reducing scrap, upholding stringent quality and brand standards and enhancing customer satisfaction”. Explaining the technology, Ampacet said: “The PMD vacuums a stream of material from or just after the classifier. A vibrational channel precisely controls the speed and posi- tion of the mounted Spectro probe for consistent, accurate readings on a continuous basis. Once measured, the pellets are vacuumed back to the classifier, storage bin or silo.” The Spectro continuously measures and compares colour values of the stream to the saved colour standard and issues an immediate pass/fail signal based on pre-set tolerances. SpectroMetric PMD combines
real-time colour analysis with an automated colour correction system. The technology automatically adjusts dosing to keep the product in-specifi- cation.

The latest from Coperion is the
DewTector, a patent-pending device for automated online measurements of surface moisture content in bulk materials, particularly plastic pellets. The company reported that manual assessments of moisture are demand- ing on staff and can lead to inaccurate results, and that existing automated methods are complex and require extensive calibration. The new device simplifies measurement and provides accurate, real-time data for process control. The DewTector operates by bringing pellets into a pressure-tight chamber, where moisture is released into the air. A hygrometer is used to determine the moisture content in the air. Because the hygrometer measures only water and not any other sub- stances, it provides targeted detection that is reliable and unaffected by changes in material composition, Coperion reported. The system does not require extensive calibration and is easy to operate and maintain. It achieves an accuracy of +5% to −15% across moisture levels ranging from several thousand ppm to a few hundred ppm, with up to ten meas- urements per hour, Coperion said. In addition to moisture content,
there are a range of pellet quality parameters that can affect down- stream processing, such as size,
