Compounds for cars of today and tomorrow


The continued rise of electric vehicles (EVs) repre- sents a critical stage in the evolution of the automo- tive industry, with a pivotal aspect for the plastics industry being the development and application of advanced compounds which are essential for reducing weight and enhancing performance while improving safety and overall efficiency. Envalior – the company formed last year


through a merger between the engineering polymers businesses of DSM and Lanxess – has positioned itself at the forefront of the sector. It offers an extensive product portfolio of high-per- formance thermoplastics and advanced composite solutions, many of which were highlighted at the recent international VDI congress Plastics in Automotive Engineering 2024 in Mannheim, Germany. “We see ourselves as a hub of innovation and ideas,” said Matthias Theunissen, Advanced Development Expert Lightweight Technologies at Envalior. “With our wealth of product, application,

and technology expertise, [we] help development partners realise innovations.” At the event Envalior displayed several compo- nents used in power control units (PCUs), including a cooling frame with integrated insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) made from Xytron G4024T, a polyphenylene sulphide (PPS) with excellent stability and creep resistance. The same material was used for the high-power transistors in a fully assembled IGBT module with silicon carbide. In addition, the company offers a range of compounds made from halogen-free, flame-retardant polyph- thalamides (PPA) in its ForTii portfolio and polybutyl- ene terephthalates (PBT) in its Pocan portfolio. PBT is a desirable choice up to a current-voltage operating range of around 400 amps/2.5 kV, while PPA and PPS can withstand higher voltages. The company, which says it hopes to become a
