I & II Operability of wind park maintenance vessels
WiSP & WoSP Wind Assisted & Wind
Operational Ship Propulsion
MARIN is always keen to anticipate and help in transitions in shipping. An increase in sustainability and a reduction in CO2 emissions is a transition that we believe is about to start. One potential solution is Wind Assisted Ship Propulsion and this has led to two new JIPs:
Within Wind Assisted Ship Propulsion (WiSP) we intend to derive recommended practices on how to do performance predictions for wind assisted ships, going beyond the simple framework as specified for EEDI. WiSP will also study how current statutory and class rules could be complied with and improved. So far 15+ parties have shown serious interest.
Wind Operational Ship propulsion (WoSP) investigates how wind assisted ships can be best designed for demanding operations, such as manoeuvring (compliance to IMO 137(76)), course keeping in stern quartering seas, safe return to port and the minimum power requirement. Participants are more than welcome to join both JIPs.

The objective of the Offshore Maintenance JIP Part I is to select the most suitable maintenance strategy and vessel for a wind park for any time of the year. Part II focuses on the short- term, access strategy selection. To reach this objective the Deltares Meteo Dashboard system will be further developed so it can be used for day- to-day decision making.
So far sixteen different participants have joined including shipbuilders, OM operators, access system and utility companies. The project will run until 2019 and is open to join.

Greenwater FPSO Greenwater susceptibility and loading
The FPSO Greenwater JIP aims to provide a reliable and consistent risk based methodology to investigate the green water susceptibility and loading from the bow and sides of FPSOs in order to allow the definition of design loads. The project will setup a risk- based framework, identify screening methods for critical greenwater events and validate this with model tests. The project aims to develop a comprehensive load, response and design methodology.
The project is a joint initiative from ABS, BV and MARIN and is currently supported by Petrobras, ConocoPhillips, Woodside, TechnipFMC, Bluewater, SBM Offshore and Sofec. And still open to join!

Cable JIP Static Cable for Offshore Wind TLP
The Cable JIP is a TKI Wind op Zee research project for floating wind solutions and electrical power offtake cables. The project aims to de-risk electrical cable installations for a deep draught TLP floating wind solution, by understanding and validating the power cable’s behaviour in tank and model tests.
The JIP examines the forces and motions of dynamic cables in extreme (storm) conditions, as well as wind turbine induced fatigue, floater induced fatigue and Vortex Induced Vibration. Subsea cables may be responsible for 80% of failure cases in the renewable energy industry. For static cables, the main hazards result from human activities. Failures of dynamic cables are less well understood and are presently subject to investigation. Failure of dynamic offtake cables can result in significant loss of revenue for the operator.
The Cable JIP is executed and managed by MARIN, Bluewater and Twentsche Kabelfabriek (TKF).
