6 KOMtech: How research and innovation is key to tackling the cycles of the maritime industry Report interviews Aziz Merchant, Executive Director of Keppel Offshore & Marine Technology Centre (KOMtech).

10 KOMtech’s new semi-submersible design under test To make offshore operations economically viable in the present challenging oil market,

high operability is required.

11 Software-in-the-Loop provides valuable alternative to traditional offshore wind model testing New hybrid model testing solution gives more flexibility.

12 Successful delivery of the Boskalis Bokalift1 simulator The simulator, with four operator positions, enables Boskalis to train the crew for

heavy lift operations and to verify the engineered operational procedures.

14 Extreme wave loading…the future is hybrid! Advanced numerical tools are increasingly being used as design and verification tools.

What does this mean for the challenging field of extreme wave loading?

15 MARIN launches first ‘Digital Twin’ to investigate reducing emissions As NIOZ’s flagship RV Pelagia embarks on a seven-month expedition, MARIN creates

her ‘digital twin’ to sail the same route but without emissions.

16 The ‘Human Factor’ is at the heart of a new offshore research programme With more complexity and increasingly stringent safety standards, it is vital to focus closely on the human element in an offshore operation.

Dear Reader,

Company mission statements can sometimes be empty slogans. I must admit this crossed my mind when we formulated ours: ‘Making ships cleaner, safer and smarter and to contribute to a sustainable use of the seas’. Or in summary: Better Ships, Blue Oceans!

But this year I again realised how important it is to have a serious mission and to live up to it.

Our mission, ‘Making ships safer’ became very concrete when we were performing tests to establish why the Korean Sewol ferry capsized. In April 2014 the ferry, which was carrying 476 passengers, capsized on her way to the holiday island Jeju and sank close to the South Korean coast. Tragically, 304 people lost their lives, the majority of which were secondary school students on a school trip.

As an independent research institute MARIN was appointed by the Korean Sewol Investigation Commission (SIC) to investigate the cause of the capsizing and rapid sinking of the vessel. MARIN started the investigation with computer simulations. These were followed by tests with a capsizing model. For this purpose a free sailing model was equipped with active propellers, rudders and stabilising fins. Additionally, the shifting containers, cars and trucks were modelled. Subsequently tests were conducted with a model in which the compartments, holds, tanks and in-flow openings were carefully modelled at scale to investigate the actual flooding and sinking. Finally, the effects of orders and actions of the vessel’s officers were investigated in the large bridge simulator.

This was undoubtedly the most important MARIN project of recent years. Everyone at MARIN fully realised the impact of the capsizing and flooding tests on the families of the victims, some of them present during the tests. Therefore we started each test series with a moment of silence.

At MARIN we consider it our responsibility to contribute to such investigations with our knowledge, experience and test facilities to understand the actual events and to prevent such disasters in the future. ‘Making ships safer’ is at the heart of our mission.
