Dear Readers,
2009 may well turn out to be one of the most challenging years many of us have faced in recent times. However, there is always room for innova- tion and new technological developments that help improve efficiency and that offer cost-effective so- lutions. MARIN continues to strive to offer such so- lutions to its customers.
Many of these new developments are covered in Report. This issue is also our annual special Offshore edition to mark the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC).
LNG continues to see significant growth and many of our projects concern this sector. 2009 has been dubbed “The Year of LNG” and several interesting projects are described. One development outlined is how a Condor computer cluster is being used to help analyse downtime events in the LNG industry. Report also highlights a world first, as the Adriatic LNG terminal is placed at its final destination.
Model testing itself comes under the spotlight. We outline just how we make 150 models each year and our long history of Dynamic Positioning (DP) model testing. In addition, Report describes MARIN’s test campaign on the multi-purpose off- shore operations vessel Pieter Schelte.
I also like to draw your attention to an interview we have been lucky enough to be granted with one of the few experts in the world on extreme waves. Sverre Haver of StatoilHydro reveals his lasting fascination for extreme waves. MARIN will again be attending the OTC this year where we will be presenting a paper at the OTC. A brief glance of the paper is included in this issue. We will also be present at the Marine Simulation and Ship Maneuverability (MARSIM) this year, presenting three papers.
We look forward to seeing you at the OTC (stand 2427) or MARSIM. At both events we will be presenting various papers.
Arne Hubregtse President of MARIN
