MARIN hosted the 11th International Ship Stability Workshop in June. With about 100 participants from 22 countries and 44 papers, the workshop was very successful.

The aim of the workshop was to have an extensive exchange of ideas and methodol- ogies on the stability of intact and damaged ships in waves. The following sessions took place: - Goal-based stability standards - Risk-based analysis methods - Naval ship stability - Safety of damaged vessels - Developments in intact and damage stability modelling

- Operational Safety - Roll damping - Flooding of damaged ships - Parametric roll - Special problems Combining input from all the presentations, an overview of the very latest developments in ship stability research was obtained,

including a wide spectrum of items ranging from stability standards to analysis methods and operational guidance. Due to sessions on naval ship stability and operational safety, there was a good dia- logue between the commercial shipping and naval community. Although stability requirements for naval vessels can be significantly different from those for com- mercial shipping, the analysis methods used to assess ship stability should be based on the same principles. Therefore, the comparison and discussion of require- ments, approaches, numerical methods and means for operational guidance were thought to be very fruitful.

The next ISSW will be hosted by DTMB, Washington DC, in 2011.
