editorial Dear Reader, 6 Holtrop-Mennen founders reveal the secret of method’s

long-lasting success In the naval architect world Holtrop-Mennen is a household name. As Jan Holtrop and Frits Mennen retire after more than 40 years at MARIN, Report asks them to reflect on their ground-breaking achievement.

report 3

First of all I would like to begin by letting you know about a true milestone in MARIN’s history. We have just made our 9,000th test model! It is amazing to think back to those early days when MARIN started in 1932 and now we have just modelled Big Foot, the world’s deepest TLP at an incredible 5,187 ft.

Report also celebrates its own milestone - our 100th issue. We started publishing MARIN’s customer magazine in May 1979, so it is gratifying to know that customers are still just as interested in reading about the latest developments in the hydrodynamics world. We highlight these develop- ments throughout this issue of Report.

In yet another special occasion, Cooperative Research Navies celebrates its 20th anniversary. We outline its continuing work on code improve- ment and validation.

Model validation is very much the theme of this issue of Report and readers can see the work MARIN does behind the scenes to make sure we give our customers the most accurate measure- ments and predictions possible.

We are also very proud to feature the pioneering Holtrop-Mennen Method - a household name in the naval architect world. We interview the two founders of the method, Jan Holtrop and Frits Mennen, as they retire after more than 40 years at MARIN.

And as well as more traditional model testing we look at the increasing role of Com- putational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in today’s research industry.

We hope you enjoy reading Report 100 and all our other issues as much as we have enjoyed writing them for you over the years!
